The 2023 New York Film Festival has unveiled its lineup for the main slate, which includes a diverse range of films from around the world. Among the additions to the lineup are Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers,” as well as Cannes selections “Anatomy of a Fall” and “La Chimera”.
The Palme d’Or-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” directed by Justine Triet, follows the story of a novelist, played by Sandra Hüller, who stands trial for the murder of her husband. Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera” stars Isabella Rossellini and Josh O’Connor in a tale about a British ex-convict reconnecting with tomb raiders in search of valuable antiquities from the Etruscan period.
Hüller also stars in another film featured in the festival, “The Zone of Interest,” directed by Jonathan Glazer. Loosely inspired by Martin Amis’ novel, the film explores the banality of evil and revolves around a German family during the mid-1940s, with the patriarch working as the head Commandant at Auschwitz.
The festival will also present the U.S. premiere of “Evil Does Not Exist,” directed by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, known for his Oscar-winning film “Drive My Car.” This ecopolitical thriller follows a single parent and his young daughter living in a rural village, which is soon to be disrupted by a Tokyo company building a glamping site for city tourists.
Other noteworthy films in the main slate include “Orlando, My Political Biography,” a documentary that delves into past and present trans lives, guided by Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando”; Annie Baker’s directorial debut “Janet Planet,” starring Julianne Nicholson; and the U.S. premiere of Radu Jude’s “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World.”
The main slate features films from 18 different countries, including prizewinning selections from Cannes and Berlin. One highlight is the North American premiere of a recently unearthed and restored short film directed by Agnès Varda and featuring Pier Paolo Pasolini, both of whom were in town for the fourth NY Film Festival in 1966. The film will be screened before “La Chimera” and “Pictures of Ghosts.”
The 2023 New York Film Festival will kick off with Todd Haynes’ “May December” and conclude with the closing film “Ferrari” by Michael Mann. Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” has been selected as the centerpiece film.
