BMW recently unveiled a newly redesigned version of their compact crossover, the X2. The new X2 will be available in two grades for the U.S. market: the X2 xDrive28i and the X2 M35i xDrive, which boasts an impressive 312 horsepower. While an electric iX2 model is being planned for certain markets, unfortunately the U.S. will not be one of them. The official debut of the X2 is scheduled for later this month at the 2023 Tokyo auto show, with sales expected to begin in March 2024.
The current X2 model was introduced in 2018 and has been quite successful for BMW, with over 380,000 units sold worldwide. The redesigned X2 builds upon the success of its predecessor with improved performance, enhanced technology features, and increased interior space.
The new X2 shares its underlying platform, the FAAR platform, with the recently redesigned X1 model. With a length of 179.8 inches, the X2 is approximately 7.6 inches longer than the previous generation. It also features a slightly wider body and larger-diameter wheels. The X2 xDrive28i comes standard with 19-inch wheels, while the X2 M35i xDrive boasts 20-inch wheels. Both models offer the option of upgrading to 21-inch wheels.
Inside, the X2 offers a similar interior design to the X1, as well as the overseas 2-Series Active Tourer. One notable change is the absence of a traditional hood over the instrument cluster. Instead, the instrument cluster stands alone as a floating 10.3-inch screen, accompanied by a second 10.7-inch screen for the infotainment system. The X2 can comfortably seat five passengers, and BMW claims it offers 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which can be expanded to 51.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.
The new X2 also boasts the latest version of BMW’s iDrive interface, version 9.0. This updated system is more user-friendly than previous versions, with a continuously displayed navigation system’s map view or a customizable home page. Popular functions are easily accessible on a single level, eliminating the need to enter submenus and keeping the driver’s focus on the road.
Standard features on the X2 include LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power tailgate, roof rails, privacy glass, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and multiple electronic driver-assist features. These assist features include forward collision warning with intersection support, active lane control, active blind spot detection, and park sensors. The X2 M35i xDrive also comes with an illuminated grille, adding a touch of sportiness to its design.
Both the X2 xDrive28i and X2 M35i xDrive are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Additionally, both models feature a built-in mechanical limited-slip differential and all-wheel drive. The X2 xDrive28i generates 241 horsepower, while the X2 M35i xDrive boasts an impressive 312 horsepower. Acceleration times for the 0-60 mph benchmark are 6.2 seconds for the xDrive28i and 5.2 seconds for the M35i xDrive. The top speed is limited to 130 mph as standard, but it can be increased to 149 mph for the xDrive28i and 155 mph for the M35i xDrive with the addition of performance tires.
The X2 M35i xDrive also benefits from a sport-tuned chassis, featuring adaptive dampers and larger brake rotors. The front brake rotors measure up to 15.2 inches, while the rear rotors are 13.0 inches. The brake calipers are painted gray and bear the “M” logo, and they are four-piston units.
Production of the X2 and X1 models takes place at BMW’s plant in Regensburg, Germany. Pricing details for the new X2 will be announced closer to its market launch in 2024.
