The recently unveiled 2024 Ford Mustang has created quite a stir among car enthusiasts, and Ford is wasting no time in introducing special treatments for the new model. One of the first special treatments to be revealed is the California Special package, which is set to make its formal debut at the 2023 Los Angeles auto show. Priced at $1,995, this package can be added to the Mustang GT Premium grade, whether it be the coupe or convertible version.
The California Special treatment has a rich history, dating back to the original Mustang. It was first introduced in the 1968 model year as a dealer special inspired by a 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype. Originally named the Mustang GT/CS, the car boasted a blacked-out grille, fog lamps, and a side racing stripe that ended ahead of a rear fender scoop. Fast forward to the present day, and the modern package pays homage to its predecessor with a blacked-out grille and side stripes. However, there are differences – for example, there’s no side scoop on the rear fender, which was part of the previous California Special package. Additionally, it features bright blue accents in a color known as Rave Blue, which are incorporated into the standard 19-inch wheels available in two designs.
The interior also gets the California Special treatment, with blue accents and black trim, including leather seats with contrast stitching in a mix of blue and gray threads. Custom badges and floor mats complete the specially designed interior.
As for performance, the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine remains unchanged, delivering 480 hp as standard or 486 hp with an available active exhaust system. For those who seek even more power, Ford has announced a factory supercharger upgrade at the 2023 SEMA show earlier this month, promising at least 800 hp. While pricing details for the upgrade are yet to be disclosed, a similar upgrade for the previous-generation Mustang cost $8,500.
The 2023 Los Angeles auto show is set to kick off on November 16th, and while it’s the official debut for the California Special package, interested buyers can already place an order for it through Ford’s website. With the blend of heritage-inspired design elements and modern performance upgrades, the California Special package is sure to appeal to Mustang enthusiasts looking for a unique and powerful driving experience in the new 2024 Ford Mustang.
