marveling at the grip levels. Each corner is dispatched with ease. I even go as far to try the Track setting, which tightens everything up at the expense of compliance, to see what the GT 63 is capable of achieving. The power, braking, and grip levels are truly astonishing. It’s difficult to believe a 4,460-pound car can be this agile. Mercedes has crafted something special here. There’s no corner where the GT can’t be driven with vigor. Yet, I can’t help but note that while the GT 63 is a fine car in a straight line or on a smooth, fast circuit, it’s at its most awkward in normal daily driving. The throttle is hypersensitive and never fully off. The transmission never really slips into a gear for that smooth getaway or leaves the driver to just pedal the accelerator. On varied roads at a pedestrian pace, the GT 63 is nervous. Moreover, the AMG GT 63 is far from inexpensive. While I can understand the premium—for both the car and the potential premium gas bills—there’s a lot of pride of ownership here. With great looks, refinement, and advanced technology, while trying really hard to balance a fast ride with amazing handling, the car achieves a lot in one package. However, it’s hard to get past the uncomfortable ride when you just want to amble along thinking about the car’s safety features and hoping it stays on a tightrope through a serious of challenging turns on a mountain road. After my thrilling time in the GT 63, I’m excited to get a taste of the upcoming Exterior Carbon Fiber packaging and performance seats. While the ups and downs of my drive didn’t always showcase the car’s best traits, they did provide opportunity for the full range of sensations and experiences the production GT 63 can offer. As I’m reflecting on my drive, I recognize that I came away from this experience understanding the GT 63 as a fine grand tourer with immensely satisfying straight-line speed, entertaining handling, and good looks. The GT 63 was well worth the time and effort to get to know. And the Sierras are still beautiful even in the fog and rain.
