The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagon, has been a staple in the luxury SUV market for over four decades. With its iconic boxy design and off-road capabilities, the G-Class has garnered a loyal following and has become a status symbol for many. Even though the current G-Class has been on the market for a few years now, Mercedes-Benz has continued to make periodic updates to keep it fresh and relevant.
Recently, camouflaged prototypes of an updated G-Class have been spotted testing, indicating that Mercedes-Benz has plans to give the SUV another round of updates. From the spy shots, it is evident that the front and rear fascias have been revised, giving the G-Class a slightly refreshed look. The interior of the vehicle was also covered up, hinting at possible changes inside as well. One significant upgrade that is expected is the addition of Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system, which has been featured in all of their recent models except for the G-Class.
In addition to these cosmetic changes, there are also rumors of significant powertrain updates for the G-Class. It is speculated that the non-AMG versions of the G-Class will no longer be powered by the V-8 engine. Instead, Mercedes-Benz is said to be replacing it with an inline-6 engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. This change aligns with the automotive industry’s ongoing shift towards electrification and improved fuel efficiency. Furthermore, a G500 V8 Final Edition was recently launched overseas, raising the question of whether the G550 in the U.S. will also receive the same engine swap.
On the other hand, the AMG G 63 will likely retain the V-8 engine, albeit with the possibility of a mild-hybrid or even a plug-in hybrid system. Mercedes-Benz has already introduced a V-8-based plug-in hybrid system in their AMG S 63 E Performance and GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe models. This hybrid system combines the powerful twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 with an electric motor, resulting in a jaw-dropping combined output of around 800 horsepower.

While the exact release date for the updated G-Class has not been confirmed, it is expected to debut either late this year or early next year. It will likely be introduced as a 2024 or 2025 model. Coinciding with this update, Mercedes-Benz is also working on an all-electric version of the G-Class, known as the EQG. The EQG is set to feature four electric motors, enhancing its off-road capabilities while offering zero-emissions driving. The EQG is also expected to debut around the same time as the updated G-Class.
