Porsche enthusiasts will be excited to learn that an updated version of the 911 GT3 Touring has been spotted testing. Although the 2022 model only recently arrived, Porsche is already working on a mild update for this high-performance sports car. This update is expected to coincide with the planned update for the full 992-generation range. The 911 range will see several other models updated as well, including the Carrera, Carrera Cabriolet, Carrera GTS, Targa, Turbo, Turbo S, and regular GT3.
The updated 911 range, internally referred to as the 992.2 generation, is expected to hit the market late this year or early next year. These updated models will likely be released as 2024 models, although some variants may arrive as 2025 models. One of the key updates in these models will be a revised dash featuring a fully digital instrument cluster. This will be similar to the setup found in Porsche’s electric Taycan and the recently updated 2024 Cayenne.
In terms of design changes, the front and rear fascias of the updated 911 range are expected to receive some tweaks. This can be deduced from the camouflage gear seen on the test vehicles. One notable change is the integration of the front turn signals within the headlights, moving away from the current placement on the front fascia. Speaking of headlights, the updated 911 range will sport Porsche’s latest matrix LED design. These headlights will feature four individual projectors instead of the single main unit used in the current design. This new design, which was first implemented in the 2024 Cayenne, provides a more precise light pattern and increased brightness.
While it remains unclear what Porsche has in store for the mechanical aspects of the updated 911 range, it is expected that there will be a slight increase in power. This is a common occurrence in updates of this nature. Currently, the GT3 Touring is equipped with a 4.0-liter flat-6 engine that delivers an impressive 502 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels through either a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission.
One of the most anticipated updates in the 911 range is the introduction of hybrid technology. While it is unlikely that the GT3 will receive this technology, some variants in the updated range are expected to offer hybrid powertrains. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume stated in 2022 that the 911’s hybrid system would resemble the system found in the former 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car. This means that it will not be a plug-in hybrid system like the one found in the 918 Spyder hypercar. Instead, the hybrid system will purely support the gas engine and recover energy under braking, without the need for a plug.
Overall, the upcoming update for the Porsche 911 range is highly anticipated by enthusiasts and industry observers. The addition of a fully digital instrument cluster, design tweaks, and potentially hybrid powertrains will further enhance the appeal of these iconic sports cars. With the first models expected to arrive later this year or early next year, Porsche fans will soon have even more reasons to be excited about the future of the 911.
