Audi is preparing to unveil an updated version of its current A3 generation, and it seems that the performance variants of the car will also receive a refresh. The latest prototype spotted out testing is for the updated RS 3 sedan, joining prototypes for the regular A3 sedan, sporty S3 sedan, and RS 3 Sportback, which are also undergoing testing.
The current A3 made its way to the U.S. for the 2022 model year, and the updated version is expected to be revealed late this year or early next. The car and its performance variants are expected to arrive in the U.S. as 2025 models, offering customers the sedan body style.
The prototype for the RS 3 sedan is only lightly camouflaged, revealing new designs for the internals of the lights at both ends, a new grille, and updated front and rear fascias. The prototype’s features, such as the huge wheel and brake combination, lowered suspension, and signature RS oval exhaust tips, indicate that it is for an RS version of the A3.
As shown in spy shots, the prototype features temporary exhaust tips poking out of the signature RS oval exhaust tips, hinting at the performance of the updated RS 3 sedan. The images from the spy shots highlight the evolution of the design, teasing enthusiasts with the changes to expect in the updated RS 3 sedan.
Additionally, the update is expected to include minor tweaks in the cabin, potentially introducing a larger screen for the infotainment system. The current screen tops out at 12.3 inches, so an upgrade in this area would be a welcome addition.
One aspect that remains unclear is whether any changes are planned for the powertrain department. The current RS 3 is equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 engine that delivers 401 horsepower. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It’s possible that a mild-hybrid system may be added with this update, enhancing the performance and efficiency of the RS 3 sedan.
The latest A3 range, representing the fourth generation of the nameplate, is based on an updated version of the Volkswagen Group’s front-wheel-drive MQB modular platform. It shares its platform with the latest Volkswagen Golf, which is due for an update alongside the A3. Prototypes for the updated Golf have also been spotted testing.
Furthermore, it has been reported that future generations of the A3 and Golf will be offered exclusively with electric power. This aligns with the industry-wide shift toward electrification, as automakers aim to reduce emissions and meet environmental targets.
In summary, the updated RS 3 sedan is expected to bring refreshed styling, potential enhancements in the cabin, and possibly changes in the powertrain department. With the A3 range transitioning to electric power in future generations, the updated RS 3 sedan offers enthusiasts a last glimpse of the traditional performance experience before the shift to electrification. As Audi continues to innovate and evolve its lineup, the updated RS 3 sedan is a promising addition to the brand’s portfolio.
