Audi is currently in the process of developing an updated version of its S3 Sportback hot hatch, which is sold in markets outside of the United States. The development of these new models has been confirmed by the sighting of prototypes during testing. One of these test vehicles was recently caught lapping Germany’s renowned Nürburgring racetrack. In addition to the S3 Sportback, prototypes for an updated S3 sedan have also been spotted. It is the sedan version that will make its way to the U.S.
The release of the updated S3 models is expected to coincide with the launch of an updated version of the regular A3. These new models are anticipated to make their debut later this year or early next year. In the U.S., the updated A3 range is expected to arrive as 2025 models. Furthermore, it is anticipated that Audi will also introduce an updated version of the RS 3 performance flagship.
The prototype of the S3 model reveals several design updates for both the front and rear of the vehicle. The lights at both ends feature new internal designs, and the car sports a refreshed grille, as well as updated front and rear fascias. The presence of an upgraded brake package confirms that this particular prototype is for the S3. Additionally, the quad exhaust tips at the rear follow the traditional design for Audi’s S cars. Inside the cabin, minor tweaks are anticipated, including the possibility of a larger screen for the infotainment system. Currently, the screen on the S3 tops out at 12.3 inches.
While it remains uncertain if any changes will be made to the powertrain, the current S3 model is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine that delivers 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, enabling the S3 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. For buyers seeking even greater performance, the RS 3 is available, boasting a 2.5-liter turbo-5 engine with 401 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both the S3 and RS 3 come standard with Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
