Ram’s 1500 TRX super truck, known for its powerful V-8 engine, might be undergoing a significant change. Recent tests of a prototype by Stellantis’ commercial vehicles brand suggest that the 2025 Ram 1500 TRX could potentially be equipped with a 6-cylinder engine instead.
A video captured by Car Spy Media showcases the prototype’s unmistakable TRX features, such as its pumped fenders and wide tires. However, the sound emitted during acceleration suggests that the prototype is powered by a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine rather than the supercharged V-8 usually found in the TRX. The lack of the characteristic whine and rumble associated with a V-8 supports this theory.
Additional evidence suggests that this new engine is being tested for the 2025 TRX. Ram recently confirmed that the 2024 1500 TRX would be the last model to feature the Hellcat supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. To commemorate the end of an era, Ram introduced the limited-edition 2024 1500 TRX 6.2L Supercharged V8 – Final Edition, with only 4,000 units available worldwide. While Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis hinted at ongoing developments for the TRX, no specific details were provided. However, rumors have circulated about Ram potentially adopting Stellantis’ Hurricane 3.0-liter turbo-6 for future TRX models.
The high-output (HO) variant of the Hurricane engine already powers the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, a hefty full-size luxury SUV weighing over 6,000 pounds. The engine produces 510 hp, making it a suitable candidate for the lighter TRX. However, it is unlikely to match the performance levels of the outgoing V-8 unless additional horsepower is unlocked.
The current TRX model, with its Hellcat V-8 engine, offers an impressive 702 hp, allowing for a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.5 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds at 108 mph, and a top speed of 118 mph. Switching to the turbo-6 engine will likely result in improved fuel economy and may even justify a lower price point compared to the current TRX, which starts at approximately $85,000.
The camouflage gear seen on the prototype suggests that there will also be some styling changes accompanying the new powertrain. Updates to the interior can also be expected.
The 2025 TRX is expected to make its debut in the first half of next year, with sales expected to commence in late summer or early fall. As development progresses, further updates will be provided.
Overall, the move to a 6-cylinder engine, if confirmed, represents a significant shift for the popular Ram 1500 TRX. While enthusiasts may mourn the loss of the iconic V-8 engine, the adoption of a turbo-6 engine signifies Ram’s commitment to improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions without compromising on performance. The upcoming 2025 TRX promises to be an exciting addition to Ram’s lineup, offering a powerful and capable truck with a more environmentally friendly powertrain option.
