Mark Zuckerberg recently announced the Meta Quest 3 VR headset, a highly anticipated upgrade for those who currently own the Quest 2. However, the Quest 3 won’t be available until September, so in the meantime, Meta has promised a software update that will improve the performance of the Quest 2 and Quest Pro and ensure the devices remain supported for a longer period.
Meta has now rolled out the v55 update, which includes several significant changes. The Quest 2 has received a 19 percent increase in GPU speed, while the Quest Pro has seen an 11 percent improvement. Both headsets have also experienced up to a 26 percent increase in CPU power. These performance upgrades aim to provide users with smoother game performance and a more responsive user interface.
One exciting addition is the Dynamic Resolution Scaling feature, allowing applications to take advantage of higher pixel density while maintaining consistent frame rates. This means users can enjoy enhanced visual quality in their VR experiences.
Developers are also given the opportunity to update their games and apps in order to take full advantage of these performance gains. The Meta blog post even includes a sample video showcasing how The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners looks better with the increased resolution made possible by the headset performance updates.
In addition to performance improvements, the v55 update brings new software experiences to the Meta Quest ecosystem. The Explore tab has been expanded to include Meta’s media content, such as short-form videos and content from Facebook and Instagram. As previously tested, Meta has also introduced Reels, making it possible to view short videos in VR. Meta’s Horizon Worlds has also received new locations to explore and new digital outfits for avatars. The Explore update is rolling out gradually to users.
The previous software update, version 54, introduced notifications from non-VR apps, including Messenger. In v55, Meta has gone a step further by adding a standalone Messenger app in VR. This means users can communicate with friends without needing to remove their headset or reach for their smartphone.
Another exciting feature in the v55 update is multi-touch gesture support for the Meta Quest Browser. Users can now zoom in and out and interact with elements using hand gestures, in addition to the Touch controllers. This feature provides a glimpse into the hand controls available in an upcoming headset.
Overall, the v55 update brings significant improvements and new experiences to the Meta Quest VR ecosystem. Users can expect enhanced performance, new media content, improved communication capabilities, and more interactive browsing. These updates demonstrate Meta’s commitment to continuously enhancing the VR experience for its users. As the company focuses on the release of the Quest 3 in September, current Quest 2 and Quest Pro owners can enjoy a heightened VR experience until the new hardware becomes available.
