In addition to the best website award, THR also received first-place recognition in several other categories. Gary Baum won in the Feature Film/TV category for his piece titled “The Many Lives and Dying Words of Aesop Aquarian.” This in-depth article explores the life and legacy of Aesop Aquarian, a counter-cultural figure from the 1960s.

These wins at the SoCal Journalism Awards come shortly after THR was named the best entertainment publication at the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards in December. The consistent recognition from prestigious organizations like the Los Angeles Press Club highlights THR’s exceptional quality of journalism and its impact on the industry.
In addition to the awards presented to various publications, the Los Angeles Press Club also honored individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of journalism. The ABC7 anchor David Ono received the Joseph M. Quinn Award for lifetime achievement. John Leguizamo and Giselle Fernandez from Spectrum News 1 were both recognized with the President’s Award for their impact on media.
The philosopher-writer-filmmaker Bernard-Henri Lévy was presented with the Daniel Pearl Award for his courage and integrity in journalism. Gary Sinise, known for his extensive philanthropic work, received the Bill Rosendahl Public Service Award for his contribution to civic life. Alene Tchekmedyian, a journalist from The Los Angeles Times, was honored with the Guardian Award for her contributions to press freedom.
The ceremony was dedicated to Ukrainian journalists and highlighted the unjust detainment of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, in Russia on charges of espionage. Gershkovich and his employer vehemently deny these accusations, and the ceremony shed light on the importance of press freedom and the protection of journalists worldwide.
The SoCal Journalism Awards not only celebrate outstanding journalism but also serve as a platform to advocate for the rights and safety of journalists in an increasingly challenging and dangerous environment. The Los Angeles Press Club, through these awards and special recognitions, acknowledges the invaluable contributions of journalists and their crucial role in upholding truth and democracy.
