Transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals across the globe continue to battle for equal rights and protection. In the face of persistent attacks from conservative lawmakers, the fight for justice remains ongoing. Sadly, recent events have highlighted the vulnerability of transgender women of color to discrimination and violence. To better understand how to support and empower transgender people within your community, I spoke with three advocacy groups dedicated to protecting trans individuals.
The first step in supporting transgender individuals is recognizing their humanity. Tiommi Luckett, a senior national organizer for Positively Trans at the Transgender Law Center, emphasizes the importance of understanding that transgender people deserve a place in the world. By acknowledging their humanity, we can begin to address their needs and fight for equality without seeing it as a demand for special rights.
It is crucial to avoid assuming that we understand the full scope of a trans person’s experience based on preconceived ideas or other people’s opinions. While it is essential to recognize the challenges and discrimination faced by transgender individuals, it is equally important to acknowledge the vibrancy and diversity of their lives, which is often absent from media representations. Camila Camaleón, an administrative coordinator at Gender Justice LA, stresses the need for society to witness and celebrate trans joy.
While national advocacy organizations play a vital role in the fight for trans rights, individuals can have a more significant impact by getting involved with local advocacy groups. By engaging with these organizations, individuals can better understand the unique challenges faced by transgender people in their immediate community. To locate trans rights groups near you, resources like Them and Trans Unite provide comprehensive lists of organizations across the United States and the United Kingdom, respectively.
Sonia Guiñansaca, a program director for Gender Justice LA, emphasizes the role of grassroots organizations in creating spaces for community healing and honoring the transgender leaders who came before them. Organizations like Gender Justice LA, led by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) transgender individuals and allies, aim to improve the lives of marginalized communities, nurture future leaders, and provide spaces for healing, artistic expression, and envisioning a better future.
Ezak Perez, an executive director at Gender Justice LA, highlights the importance of centering the voices and experiences of marginalized communities. Allies must recognize that their role is not to take charge but to listen to and uplift the leadership from individuals within these communities. Perez stresses the need for people to stand united in fighting for the issues that impact marginalized communities and fight alongside them.
In addition to actively participating in the fight for trans rights, allies must ensure their voice is heard through voting. Sasha Buchert, a director of the Nonbinary and Transgender Rights Project at Lambda Legal, emphasizes the critical role of voting in pushing for change. Consistently voting, especially among younger demographics, will create a significant impact in advocating for equal rights for all individuals.
Calling local government representatives is another effective way to take action beyond voting. Buchert suggests reaching out to local leaders to inquire about the steps they are taking to protect the lives of transgender individuals within their constituencies. Engaging with state legislators is crucial, as it ensures that the voices of trans constituents are heard, countering those who may oppose equal rights.
Speaking out against transphobia and harassment is essential in creating a more inclusive and safe environment for transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. Buchert urges allies not to tolerate subtler forms of transphobia and to actively challenge them. By refraining from condoning or staying silent in the face of transphobic comments or actions, allies can help create a more accepting culture.
Supporting trans-centered support groups through consistent donations is an impactful way to ensure year-round assistance for transgender communities. Organizations like House of Tulip in Louisiana and Lucie’s Place in Arkansas rely on donations to offer vital resources and support to their local communities. By donating consistently, regardless of the time of year, individuals can contribute to the expansion and growth of programs that aid transgender individuals.
Fighting for transgender rights is of paramount importance, as it creates a safer and more equitable society for all. Luckett emphasizes the interconnectedness of liberation, stating that true liberation is only possible when all individuals, particularly Black trans people, are free from discrimination and marginalization. Understanding the Transgender Law Center’s Trans Agenda for Liberation provides valuable insights into the complexities of this vital topic. Recognizing the humanity of transgender individuals, actively supporting local advocacy groups, listening to and centering the voices of marginalized communities, voting, contacting representatives, speaking out against harassment, and making consistent donations are all impactful ways to support and empower transgender individuals in their pursuit of equality and justice.
