Director Darren Aronofsky, known for his work on films such as Black Swan, The Wrestler, and The Whale, is set to premiere the first immersive production made for the MSG Sphere, a unique sphere-shaped venue opening in Las Vegas this fall. Aronofsky recently sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the project and share his thoughts on the potential of the Sphere.
Aronofsky believes that cinema, at its best, is an immersive medium that transports the audience into different worlds and experiences. The Sphere, with its state-of-the-art technology, aims to take that immersion to the next level. The venue features a massive wraparound LED display, a custom spatial audio system, and 4D capabilities through haptic seats and environmental effects. Those who have experienced the demonstration have been amazed by the high-resolution display and the sensation of actually being in the depicted environment.
For Aronofsky, the Sphere provides a unique opportunity to take people away from the hustle and bustle of the Vegas Strip and immerse them in the wonders of the natural world. His production, Postcard From Earth, takes audiences on a sci-fi journey into the future as our descendants reflect on our shared home. The project combines narrative and documentary elements to effectively communicate a message and create an emotional experience for the audience.
To capture the cornucopia of life, natural beauty, and human achievement, filming for Postcard From Earth took place on every continent, including locations in countries like India, Italy, and underwater in the Bahamas. Aronofsky enlisted the help of his longtime collaborator, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Matty Libatique, as well as Andrew Shulkind, who served as the Sphere director of photography for the Big Sky camera.
Postcard From Earth is also notable for being the first production to use the Big Sky camera, a bespoke camera system developed at Sphere Studios. The camera boasts a 316-megapixel, 3-inch x 3-inch HDR image sensor capable of capturing 18K x 18K images up to 120 frames per second. While the camera’s high resolution provides many advantages, it also presents challenges that the team had to overcome. Aronofsky is confident that as different artists experiment with the camera, they will find innovative ways to use it and evoke different emotional responses from audiences.
Currently in postproduction, Postcard From Earth is a learning process for both the production team and the technology they are using. Delivering a movie that utilizes more than 160,000 speakers and is half a petabyte in size is no small task. However, Aronofsky believes that every film is a learning experience, and the goal remains the same: to convey the beauty and fragility of our planet in the most impactful way possible.
Postcard From Earth is scheduled to premiere on October 6th at the MSG Sphere, making it one of the first productions to be showcased at the Las Vegas venue. The Sphere is set to open this fall with a U2 residency, and Aronofsky’s immersive production will be the perfect way to kick off this new era of entertainment. With its cutting-edge technology and innovative approach to storytelling, the MSG Sphere promises to revolutionize the way audiences experience cinema and live events. And with directors like Darren Aronofsky pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, the future of immersive entertainment looks incredibly exciting.
