HBO/Max’s critically acclaimed drama series Succession and ABC’s sitcom Abbott Elementary emerged as the top winners at the prestigious 2023 Dorian TV Awards, which were presented by the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA) on June 26.
Succession, known for its gripping portrayal of a wealthy family’s power struggle, took home the coveted award for Best TV Drama. Additionally, Sarah Snook, one of the show’s standout performers, was honored with the Best Drama Performance award. Jennifer Coolidge, who delivered a stellar supporting performance in the hit series The White Lotus, won the Best Supporting Drama Performance category. Coolidge was also recognized for her outstanding career with the esteemed GALACA TV Icon Award.
In the comedy categories, Abbott Elementary emerged victorious and received the accolade for Best TV Comedy. Bridget Everett, the lead actress of Somebody Somewhere, won the Best Comedy Performance award. Ayo Edebiri, known for her role in The Bear, took home the award for Best Supporting Comedy Performance.
HBO/Max’s The Other Two won the hearts of audiences and critics alike, earning the title of Best LGBTQ Show. The network also won in other categories, including Best Unsung Show for Somebody Somewhere and Best Non-English Language Show for Los Espookys. Overall, HBO/Max claimed a total of 18 prizes, solidifying its position as a leader in groundbreaking television.
Fire Island, a compelling TV movie or miniseries created by Searchlight Pictures and Hulu, won the award for Best TV Movie or Miniseries. This queer interpretation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice, directed by Andrew Ahn, captivated viewers with its unique perspective.
Shudder’s docuseries Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror received two Dorians: Best TV Documentary or Documentary Series and Best LGBTQ Documentary or Documentary Series. The series delved into the untold stories and impact of LGBTQ individuals in the horror genre, making it a standout in the field.
GALECA also honored comedian, writer, and actor Wanda Sykes with the Wilde Wit Award, which is designated for a performer, writer, or commentator whose observations challenge and amuse audiences. Sykes, known for her sharp comedic timing and social commentary, is considered a trailblazer in the entertainment industry.
Eliot Page, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, was named the LGBTQIA+ TV Trailblazer for their influential contributions to the industry and their courage in sharing their own journey as a transgender individual.
