BMW has recently unveiled the redesigned 2023 X1, and in its second year on the market, the compact crossover has introduced the performance variant known as the X1 M35i. The vehicle is set to go on sale in the United States in October and has a starting price of $50,895, including a $995 destination charge.
The X1 M35i falls under BMW’s M Performance range, similar to other M35i versions of BMW compacts like the M235i Gran Coupe and X2 M35i. This range offers a compromise between comfort and performance, making it a popular choice among buyers. The X1 M35i is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine capable of producing 312 horsepower. This marks the highest output for a production BMW 4-cylinder engine. With this powerful engine, the X1 M35i can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. In comparison, the regular X1 offers a maximum output of 241 hp for internal-combustion models and 308 hp for electric iX1 models.
To complement the high-performance engine, the X1 M35i comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system as standard. The transmission features paddle shifters for manual control, and a simple press of the left paddle for at least one second activates the sportiest setting for all of the vehicle’s chassis systems. The front axle of the X1 M35i also boasts a mechanical limited-slip differential to enhance handling during aggressive cornering.
In terms of the chassis, BMW has equipped the X1 M35i with adaptive dampers and large brake rotors measuring up to 15.2 inches at the front and 13.0 inches at the rear. The brake calipers are four-piston units painted in gray and adorned with the iconic “M” logo. The standard wheels measure 19 inches in diameter, but customers have the option to upgrade to 20-inch wheels for a more aggressive look.
Design-wise, the X1 M35i features several unique styling elements that set it apart from the regular X1 models. These include an M version of the front grille with horizontal double bars, quad exhaust tips with a diameter of 3.1 inches each, and aerodynamic enhancements like front and rear spoilers, new side skirts, and low-drag side mirror caps.
On the inside, the X1 M35i showcases a sporty and luxurious ambiance. It comes with Alcantara trim, an M-branded steering wheel, M-branded treadplates and pedals, and custom graphics for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Additionally, buyers can opt for M-branded front seats with extra bolstering for added comfort and support during spirited driving.
The X1 M35i is one of the first BMW models to feature version 9.0 of the automaker’s iDrive infotainment system. This upgraded system runs on Google’s Android operating system and aims to improve user experience with its QuickSelect feature, providing easy access to frequently used functions. It also offers the ability to display individually configurable graphics on the infotainment screen, giving drivers the option to personalize their digital space.
Production of the X1 M35i takes place at BMW’s plant in Regensburg, Germany. With its powerful engine, sporty design, and advanced features, the X1 M35i is set to captivate enthusiasts who seek a high-performance compact crossover without compromising on comfort and practicality.
