Jodie Turner-Smith, known for her role in the crime movie “Queen & Slim,” has been confirmed as part of the cast for the upcoming film “Tron: Ares.” This is the third installment of Disney’s popular “Tron” series, which is known for its groundbreaking use of technology in storytelling.
Joining Turner-Smith in the cast are Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters. The film is set to begin shooting in August in Vancouver, with Joachim Ronning, the director of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” at the helm.
The original “Tron” was released by Disney in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges as video game designer Kevin Flynn. It tells the story of Flynn being transported into the world of his own creation and teaming up with a security program named Tron, played by Bruce Boxleitner. Bridges returned for the 2010 sequel, “Tron: Legacy.”
Unlike its predecessors, “Tron: Ares” will venture outside the world of computers and programs. The script, written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, focuses on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world, which is unprepared for contact.
Leto, who has been attached to the project for several years, will portray Ares, the manifestation of the program. Greta Lee will play a video game programmer and tech CEO, described as the lead character. Turner-Smith’s role has not been revealed yet.
The film is being produced by Emma Ludbrook, Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Leto, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.
Turner-Smith has previously appeared in TV shows like TNT’s “The Last Ship” and SyFy’s “Nightflyers.” However, it was her role in “Queen & Slim” that garnered her critical acclaim. The film, directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe, received positive reviews for its thought-provoking story about racial injustice.
Recently, Turner-Smith was seen in Netflix’s “Murder Mystery 2” alongside Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. She is also set to appear in the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.”
Turner-Smith is represented by UTA, 111 Media, and Johnson Shapiro.
“Tron: Ares” is highly anticipated by fans of the franchise who are eager to see how it pushes the boundaries of technology and storytelling once again. With a talented cast and an intriguing plot, the film has the potential to be another success for Disney and the “Tron” series. Fans will have to wait until its release to see how it all unfolds.
