Hong Kong-born singer-songwriter Coco Lee passed away at the age of 48 after battling depression and a failed suicide attempt at home on July 2. The devastating news was announced by Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy, who revealed the details of her struggle with depression and her ultimate tragic death.
According to her sisters, Lee had been dealing with depression for several years, but her condition worsened significantly in the past few months. Despite seeking professional help and making every effort to fight her inner demons, Lee succumbed to her depression. On July 2, she tragically took her own life at home and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Despite the hospital team’s best efforts to save her and treat her coma, she passed away on July 5, 2023.
Born on January 17, 1975, in Hong Kong, which was under British control at the time, Coco Lee eventually established herself as a successful singer-songwriter in the United States. She moved to San Francisco with her mother and sisters when she was eight years old. Although she attended the University of California at Irvine after high school, her passion for pop singing in her home country led her to pursue her music career in Hong Kong.
Lee found tremendous success in the Mandarin and Cantonese pop music markets, but she also made a name for herself internationally. She contributed her vocals to the song “Before I Fall in Love,” featured on the soundtrack of the movie “Runaway Bride.” She also performed the theme song “A Love Before Time” for the acclaimed film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” at the 2001 Academy Awards.
