Hyundai’s newest addition to its electric vehicle lineup, the 2024 Ioniq 5 N, made its highly anticipated debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This electric performance model is not only powerful, with up to 641 horsepower, but it is also designed to excel on the track, showcasing impressive handling capabilities and cutting-edge technology features.
The Ioniq 5 N is based on the standard Ioniq 5, but it boasts several upgrades to enhance its performance. These upgrades include a more powerful dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, a larger battery pack, a stiffer body, larger brakes, and a sportier suspension. These enhancements work together to deliver a thrilling driving experience, whether on straightaways or around corners.
Under the hood, the Ioniq 5 N features a dual-motor setup with a 166-kw motor at the front and a 282-kw motor at the rear. This combination produces 600 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque under normal conditions. However, with the N Grin Boost function engaged, the power output increases to a staggering 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque for exhilarating acceleration. In fact, the Ioniq 5 N can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds using launch control and achieve a top speed of 162 mph.
To support its impressive power, the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with an 84-kWh battery pack, which is larger than the standard Ioniq 5’s battery. The battery pack is specifically optimized for the available drive modes, with different temperature ranges for Drag, Track, and N Race modes. With an 800-volt electrical architecture, the Ioniq 5 N can utilize fast charging capabilities and recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
One unique feature of the Ioniq 5 N is its N e-shift function, which simulates the feel of an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This function controls the motor torque to mimic the sensation of shifting gears, enhancing the overall driving experience.
In terms of sound, the Ioniq 5 N offers an optional N Active Sound+ system. This system uses a combination of interior and exterior speakers to create three different sound themes: Ignition, Supersonic, and Electric. These themes provide auditory feedback, reminiscent of an internal combustion engine, enhancing the driver’s engagement with the vehicle.
On the exterior, the Ioniq 5 N showcases a more aggressive design, with a lower stance, wider fenders, and additional aerodynamic enhancements. These design changes not only enhance the car’s visual appeal but also contribute to improved handling and performance. The larger adjustable dampers, stiffer knuckles, and reinforced subframes further enhance the car’s stability and responsiveness on the road.
To optimize its handling capabilities, the Ioniq 5 N incorporates various technologies. The N Pedal feature applies negative torque through the powertrain, shifting weight to the front wheels during cornering. The N Torque Distribution system allows for customizable power delivery between the front and rear wheels, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential optimizes power for corner exits. The car also offers an N Drift Optimizer function for controlled drifts, adding an element of excitement for enthusiasts.
Braking performance is equally impressive, with the Ioniq 5 N featuring high-performance brakes and motor regeneration capabilities. The regenerative braking can achieve up to 0.6 g of braking force, with the system providing up to 90% of the braking on the street and 50% on the track. This efficient regen braking system eliminates the need for carbon-ceramic brakes and allows for the recovery of up to 44% of the powertrain energy on the track.
Inside the cabin, the Ioniq 5 N exudes a sporty and luxurious feel. It features metal pedals, knee pads on the sides of the center console, a new N steering wheel with mode buttons, and two-toned sport seats with reinforced bolsters. The seats are available in leather and Alcantara or cloth and leather options, and they sit 0.8 inch lower than in other Ioniq 5 models. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch center touchscreen provide specific N readouts and offer over-the-air update capabilities for ongoing software enhancements.
The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is set to go on sale soon, with pricing and electric driving range details to be announced closer to the launch date. This eagerly awaited electric performance model represents Hyundai’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric mobility and delivering an exhilarating driving experience. With its impressive power, advanced technologies, and sporty design, the Ioniq 5 N is poised to make a lasting impression in the electric vehicle market.
