The first Cybertruck has finally been built at Tesla’s plant near Austin, Texas, marking a significant milestone in the development of the highly anticipated electric pickup truck. It has been almost four years since the Cybertruck was first shown to the public, and Tesla took to Twitter on July 15 to announce the completion of the first example.
The photo shared by Tesla on Twitter showcases the truck with the same bold and unconventional design that it featured as a concept in 2019. Interestingly, prototype examples spotted in the wild also confirm that the design has remained largely unchanged during the transition from concept to production. However, there have been a few modifications, such as the addition of side mirrors and a single windshield wiper.
The production version of the Cybertruck is expected to be slightly smaller than the concept, particularly in terms of width. Rumored figures suggest a length of 231 inches, a wheelbase of 145 inches, and a width of 84 inches. These dimensions are comparable to some of the longer versions of the top-selling Ford F-150.
Despite the unveiling of the first Cybertruck, Tesla has not provided any information on whether this particular truck is destined for a customer. The company has also not revealed when customer deliveries of the Cybertruck will commence. However, it is possible that an update may be announced during the release of Tesla’s second-quarter earnings results, which are scheduled for Wednesday.
In January, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the Cybertruck would not be delivered in significant numbers during 2023. Instead, the production ramp-up is planned for 2024. Tesla has set a target of producing 250,000 units of the Cybertruck annually, depending on demand.
The Cybertruck’s production timeline has faced several delays, pushing the original start date from late 2021. Despite the setbacks, Tesla seems to be making progress in bringing the Cybertruck to market.
When the Cybertruck was initially unveiled, Elon Musk revealed that it would offer different battery options for range: over 250 miles, over 300 miles, and over 500 miles. The prices for these options were stated to start at $39,900, $49,900, and $69,900, respectively. It remains uncertain if any changes will be made to these figures, as Tesla has a history of adjusting the prices of its vehicles.
The Cybertruck lineup was originally announced to include models with a single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and tri-motor all-wheel drive. However, in 2021, Elon Musk also announced a range-topping model with four motors and rear-wheel steering, further expanding the options available to buyers. Again, it remains to be seen if Tesla will adhere to these plans or make further modifications.
Overall, the completion of the first Cybertruck is an exciting development for Tesla and its customers. With its unique design and promised performance, the Cybertruck has generated significant interest since its introduction. As Tesla moves forward with the production ramp-up, customers eagerly await the opportunity to take delivery of this groundbreaking electric pickup truck.
