Nissan has recently revealed its plans to integrate Tesla’s charging connector, known as NACS (North American Charging Standard), into its vehicles sold in the United States and Canada. This move will enhance the accessibility and convenience of Tesla’s extensive charging network for Nissan owners and significantly increase the number of fast-charging locations available to them.
According to the Department of Energy, Tesla’s DC fast chargers, also known as Superchargers, currently represent around 60% of fast chargers in the United States. Earlier this year, Tesla agreed to open up its charging network to rival brands, following an arrangement with the White House. This development has allowed other automakers to tap into Tesla’s Supercharger network.
Nissan has announced that starting in 2024, Ariya owners will be provided with an adapter to use NACS chargers. However, it’s worth noting that there is no mention of the Leaf in this announcement. Furthermore, by 2025, all Nissan electric vehicles (EVs) sold in the U.S. and Canada will come equipped with a NACS connector as a standard feature. It remains unclear whether these vehicles will also have the current CCS (Combined Charging System) connector or if an adapter will be necessary.
Jérémie Papin, head of Nissan Americas, expressed satisfaction in providing Nissan EV drivers with access to thousands more fast chargers. He believes that this integration will boost confidence and convenience, particularly for long-distance journeys.
