Sleeper box office hit “Sound of Freedom” has surpassed $100 million in domestic box office earnings in just over two weeks. The film, categorized as a faith-based political thriller, has garnered attention since its release on July 4th, surpassing “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” with a first-day earning of $14.2 million. “Sound of Freedom” continues to perform well, particularly in the middle of the country and the South.
The movie stars Jim Caviezel, known for his role in “The Passion of the Christ,” as the real-life Tim Ballard. Ballard, a former agent for the Department of Homeland Security, embarks on a personal mission to bring child traffickers to justice, leading what is now known as Operation Underground Railroad. Mira Sorvino and Bill Camp also star in the film.
“Sound of Freedom” is produced and distributed by Angel Studios, a Utah-based venture that is also home to “The Chosen.” The films and series produced by Angel Studios are partially funded by the Angel Guild, a community of over 100,000 individuals who vote on eligible projects submitted to the studio.
The film has maintained a strong position on the box office charts since its debut. During its second weekend, it placed third, earning an impressive $19.7 million from 2,634 theaters. It experienced an unheard-of 39 percent week-over-week increase, coming in second during its third weekend with $27.3 million from 2,852 locations.
Cinema owners have been eager to carry “Sound of Freedom” as it continues to grow in popularity. Meanwhile, other summer releases have struggled to find success at the box office. Over the July 21-23 weekend, the film will be playing in 3,287 theaters, facing competition from films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” It is projected that “Sound of Freedom” may even surpass “The Flash,” which has earned $107 million domestically to date.
Jared Geesey, Angel Studios’ Senior VP of Global Distribution, expressed his excitement about the film’s success and emphasized its grassroots popularity. He stated, “Sound of Freedom has become the people’s movie. It was chosen by over 100,000 people in the Angel Guild, fueled by untold tens of thousands through our ‘Pay it Forward’ program, and is dominating the box office as the result of a ground-up, grassroots movement of everyday people who are making this an historic success. This is the opposite of the top-down system developed by Hollywood gatekeepers. We are empowering people to be part of choosing, funding, and sharing stories that amplify light and impact culture.”
The success of “Sound of Freedom” highlights the power of the people in influencing box office performance. Its unique production and distribution model, supported by a dedicated community, have propelled the film to great success. As it continues to gain traction and surpass other blockbuster films, it represents a shift in the industry towards a more inclusive and audience-driven approach to filmmaking.
