Giving it the beans along Big Tujunga Highway in Southern California’s Angeles National Forest, the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost feels both familiar and different. While the overall dynamics of the seventh-generation Mustang haven’t changed much, there are plenty of new technological features to explore behind the wheel.
Known internally as S650, the seventh-generation Mustang is not drastically different from its predecessor, the S550. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The S550 marked a significant shift for the Mustang, transforming it from a pony car to a true sports car, especially with the introduction of independent rear suspension in 2014.
Externally, the 2024 Mustang sports a new design that is an evolution of the S550, with hints of the Chevrolet Camaro thrown in. The most significant changes, however, can be found inside the cabin. The traditional double-binnacle instrument cluster has been replaced with a bank of screens that serve as more than just a tech hub. The 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and 13.2-inch touchscreen provide a modern and futuristic feel, while still retaining some retro influences. The Sync 4 infotainment system has twice the processing power of its predecessor and uses Unreal Engine graphics, which are commonly used in popular first-person-shooter video games. The system can be updated over-the-air automatically or on a schedule, ensuring that the Mustang is always up to date with the latest technology.
One of the standout features of the new Mustang is the customizable instrument cluster, which can be set to one of five different themes: Normal, Sport, Track, Fox Body ’87-’93, and Calm. Each theme provides a unique display and adds to the overall driving experience. For example, the Track theme features a hockey stick tachometer commonly seen in supercars, while the Fox Body theme digitally represents the analog gauges from the latter years of the third-generation Mustang.
In addition to the customizable instrument cluster, the Mustang also offers a wide range of drive modes, including Drag Strip, Slippery, and programmable Custom modes. These modes provide access to various performance features, such as launch control, line lock, and rev matching (available in the GT with the manual transmission). The Track Apps feature allows drivers to monitor telemetry, including braking distance, acceleration, and lap times. The Mustang truly offers a toybox of performance features, even in the relatively tame EcoBoost model.
On the road, the 2024 Mustang EcoBoost performs admirably. While the mechanical changes aren’t as overt as the technological ones, they enhance the overall driving experience. The steering has been improved, with a stiffer column, a more direct feel, and a slightly quicker ratio. These changes provide quicker responses and more road feel, although some may find the steering to be too light. The suspension has also been fine-tuned, resulting in a firm but controlled ride that balances body lean and provides plenty of feedback. The brakes, while not meant for extended periods of intense use, offer a sturdy and progressive feel that is more than sufficient for everyday driving.
Powering the Mustang EcoBoost is a next-generation 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine. The engine has been updated to deliver more power and improved efficiency. With a new twin-scroll turbocharger and the addition of port injection, the engine produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. It delivers a spirited performance, accompanied by a mezzo-soprano tune that fits perfectly with the Mustang’s extroverted character. While the 2.3-liter turbo-4 is a capable engine, some may prefer the more powerful Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 found in the GT models. Unfortunately, the EcoBoost model is only available with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which may not be as engaging as the outgoing 6-speed manual.
Overall, the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is a well-rounded and enjoyable sports car. With its updated technology, customizable features, and performance enhancements, it offers a thrilling driving experience. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or taking on the twisty roads of Angeles National Forest, the Mustang EcoBoost is sure to deliver excitement and exhilaration.
