Subaru is bringing back the BRZ tS for the 2024 model year, offering enthusiasts an upgraded version of the popular sports car. While the first-generation BRZ had a tS variant, this is the first time the second-generation BRZ has received the same treatment. Developed by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the BRZ tS is a milder “tuned by STI” model since there are currently no full-fledged STI models in Subaru’s U.S. lineup.
The 2024 Subaru BRZ tS benefits from various performance upgrades that enhance its handling and braking capabilities. It features STI-tuned suspension with Hitachi dampers, allowing for improved agility and responsiveness on the road. Additionally, the tS model comes equipped with Brembo brakes, including gold-painted 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers, along with larger pads and rotors. These enhancements provide enhanced stopping power and ensure better control during spirited driving. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires mounted on 18-inch wheels further contribute to the BRZ tS’ performance capabilities.
Interestingly, the upgrades offered in the 2024 BRZ tS are similar to those found in the new performance package available for its Toyota counterpart, the GR86. This package includes Brembo brakes and ZF Sachs dampers, offering comparable performance enhancements. However, Subaru has decided to make the BRZ tS a distinct trim level, potentially making it unlikely for existing BRZ owners to retrofit their vehicles with these performance upgrades.
Under the hood, the 2024 Subaru BRZ tS retains the same 2.4-liter boxer-4 engine as the standard BRZ model. It delivers a peppy 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, providing an exhilarating driving experience. However, unlike other BRZ models that offer a 6-speed automatic transmission as an option, the tS variant will be available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, emphasizing its focus on driver engagement. Power is sent to the rear wheels, ensuring a traditional rear-wheel drive experience that performance enthusiasts adore.
Externally, the 2024 BRZ tS boasts subtle visual upgrades. It features tS badges, black-trimmed mirrors and shark-fin antenna, and dark-gray finished wheels. These enhancements perfectly complement the standard BRZ colors. Notably, the large rear spoiler present in the previous-generation BRZ tS is absent in the 2024 model, contributing to its refined and understated aesthetic.
Stepping inside the cabin, the 2024 Subaru BRZ tS offers a sporty and luxurious experience. Its interior is adorned with black leather upholstery, elevated by tS-exclusive blue contrast stitching on the front seat bolsters, steering wheel, shifter boot, and parking brake boot. The 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster displays STI graphics, adding a touch of performance-oriented flair. Additionally, the tS model is based on the BRZ Limited grade, which means it comes equipped with an upgraded audio system, heated exterior mirrors, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alerts, active lane control, and adaptive headlights. These features enhance safety and convenience for drivers.
The BRZ tS also benefits from the EyeSight package, which is standard on all BRZ models. This package includes a range of advanced driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, and lead vehicle start alerts. Previously, these features were only available on BRZ models with automatic transmissions, but Subaru has extended their availability to manual-equipped cars for the 2024 model year.
Enthusiasts can expect the 2024 Subaru BRZ tS to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2024. As for pricing, Subaru will announce it closer to the on-sale date. With its performance upgrades, refined design, and enhanced features, the BRZ tS is set to offer an exciting driving experience that will surely captivate sports car enthusiasts.
