Eero, the popular provider of easily managed mesh routers, is introducing a new program called Eero for Communities. This program aims to enhance Wi-Fi networks in rental properties managed by landlords, allowing tenants to easily connect to the internet upon moving in. Known for its user-friendly setup and management, Eero routers are often preferred over internet service provider (ISP)-provided Wi-Fi/modem combo units, despite some occasional connectivity issues.
Under the Eero for Communities program, residents will only need to log in to the existing Wi-Fi setup in their new rental to gain access to the internet. They can control the Eero routers using the Eero app on their smartphones, and even subscribe to Eero Secure, a subscription service that offers additional security features, ad-blocking, a VPN service, and Eero Internet Backup. Eero Internet Backup allows users to designate a wireless hotspot or another nearby Wi-Fi network as a fallback option in case their internet connection goes down.
Connor Rice, a spokesperson for Amazon, confirmed that Eero devices supporting Wi-Fi 6 and newer will be compatible with the Eero for Communities program. The program will be available not only for single-family rentals but also for apartment buildings.
It’s important to note that Eero is designed to cater to everyday Wi-Fi users and may not have all the advanced features sought by Wi-Fi enthusiasts. However, users can still perform tasks like setting up IP reservations and port forwarding rules, or choosing a custom DNS (though some Eero Secure features may be compromised). Each Eero node typically provides a maximum of two Ethernet ports, depending on the devices supplied by the apartment complex. Moreover, users cannot separate the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands into separate SSIDs, which can pose a compatibility issue with certain smart home devices. However, it is possible to disable the 5GHz band during onboarding these devices to the network.
While Eero’s announcement introduces a hub for managing each router and network, it does not provide specific details about the level of access property managers will have to data such as traffic, bandwidth usage, or connected devices. The press release also did not mention any other ISPs, apart from Frontier, that will offer the Eero for Communities program, nor did it outline the eligibility requirements for property managers.
In a previous version of this article, Eero Internet Backup was mistakenly referred to as an “Amazon Sidewalk-based” feature. However, it is actually a separate functionality that allows users to designate a specific fallback connection, such as another wireless network. We apologize for any confusion caused by this error.
With the launch of Eero for Communities, Eero aims to revolutionize the Wi-Fi experience in rental properties by providing reliable and user-friendly mesh routers. By simplifying the setup process and offering additional features like Eero Secure, Eero Internet Backup, and remote management via the Eero app, residents can enjoy a seamless and secure Wi-Fi connection, enhancing their overall rental experience.
