Mercedes-Benz has recently unveiled an update to its mid-size van family in order to keep the vehicles current until the arrival of successor models based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform in the coming years. The sole mid-size van offered by Mercedes in the U.S. is the Metris, while in other markets, it is known as the Vito, and it is sold alongside the luxury V-Class. Both the Vito and V-Class are also available in electric variants called the eVito and EQV respectively. Although the Vito has been updated, there are no plans to introduce it to the U.S. market as an updated Metris. The current Metris will still be available for purchase in the U.S. for the time being, but it will eventually be phased out later this year.
The updates to the mid-size van family include several enhancements to the exterior styling. The most notable changes are an enlarged grille and new light signatures for the headlights, giving the vans a more modern and distinctive look. Inside, there is a new dash design that features a single panel integrating both a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen in the luxurious V-Class and EQV models. On the other hand, the Vito and eVito commercial models retain analog gauges with a 5.5-inch center screen and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. Furthermore, buyers have the option to choose from five new colors and various wheel patterns ranging from 17 to 19 inches in diameter.
In addition to the design updates, Mercedes has also introduced new digital services and safety features. One of the notable safety features is the updated Active Brake Assist, which now functions in intersections. This feature serves as a collision warning system, providing support to the driver by automatically applying extra braking pressure when needed and activating emergency braking if the driver fails to respond.
While the powertrain options remain unchanged, offering a range of diesel engines including 4- and 6-cylinder options, the eVito and EQV continue to be available with an electric powertrain. It is worth noting that the electric variants contribute to Mercedes’ goal of having electric vans account for 50% of its van sales by 2030.
While the U.S. market will soon bid farewell to the Metris, Mercedes has exciting plans for a luxury mid-size van tailored specifically for this market. Set to be launched later this decade, the new luxury van will be based on the brand’s new Van.EA platform. This dedicated electric vehicle platform is expected to make its debut in 2026, although Mercedes has not yet revealed the specific model that will showcase it.
With the introduction of these updates and the future introduction of electric vans, Mercedes is showing its commitment to providing customers with innovative and sustainable transportation solutions. The company’s vision of electric vans accounting for 50% of its van sales by 2030 demonstrates its determination to embrace the shift towards electrification and contribute to a greener future. Customers can look forward to these updates and the upcoming luxury mid-size electric van, which will undoubtedly offer a unique driving experience and further solidify Mercedes’ position in the van market.
