Inga Swenson, best known for her role in the early 1980s ABC sitcom “Benson,” has passed away. The actress died on Sunday night in Los Angeles due to natural causes, according to her son, Mark. Inga’s husband, Lowell Harris, was with her at the time of her death at a board and care facility. Inga Swenson gained fame for her portrayal of German cook Gretchen Kraus on “Benson.” She appeared in over 150 episodes over seven years and received three Emmy nominations for her work on the show. “Benson” was actually a spin-off of another TV sitcom called “Soap,” in which Inga had a multi-episode role as Ingrid Svenson. Her talent and dedication to her craft resulted in her earning two Tony nominations for Best Actress in a Musical for her performances as Lizzie Curry in “110 in the Shade” and Irene Adler in “Baker Street.” In addition to her success on television and Broadway, Inga Swenson was a trained lyrical soprano.
Before her television and theater career took off, Inga acted in two movies in 1962. She had supporting roles in “Advise and Consent” and “The Miracle Worker,” where she played Helen Keller’s mother. In February 1953, Inga married Lowell Harris, a sound engineer. The couple had two children, but tragically, one of them had already passed away. In 1998, Inga decided to retire from Hollywood.
