PBS has announced that Jeffrey Goldberg will be the new moderator for its weekly political program, Washington Week. Goldberg, who has been the editor in chief of The Atlantic since 2016, will officially start on August 11. With his addition, the program will be rebranded as Washington Week with The Atlantic. This partnership between PBS, WETA (the PBS station that produces the show), NewsHour Productions, and The Atlantic aims to enhance the show’s reputation for providing incisive and thoughtful roundtable discussions.
Goldberg will be the 10th moderator in Washington Week’s 56-year history. Previous moderators have included Yamiche Alcindor, Robert Costa, and the late Gwen Ifill. Washington Week has distinguished itself among public affairs shows by airing on Friday evenings, while most others air on Sunday mornings. Its unique time slot has allowed the program to carve out a special and rare place on television, providing a platform for civil and extended conversations about the issues affecting the news and the world.
Sharon Percy Rockefeller, president and CEO of WETA and president of NewsHour Productions, expressed her excitement about the new chapter for Washington Week. She stated, “We are thrilled to embark on this next chapter for Washington Week with the addition of Jeffrey Goldberg as moderator and The Atlantic as an editorial partner. As the longest-running news and public affairs program on primetime television, Washington Week is known for its incisive and thoughtful roundtable conversations featuring the sharpest minds in news – a reputation that will only be enhanced with Jeffrey and The Atlantic joining as partners.”
Goldberg, in turn, acknowledged the significance of Washington Week and expressed his honor in continuing the tradition. He remarked, “Washington Week holds a special and rare place on television, to have a space for civil and extended conversation about the issues affecting the news and our world. Gwen built this show into an institution, continued by Robert and by Yamiche, and I’m honored to carry on this tradition as The Atlantic embarks on this partnership.”
By partnering with The Atlantic, Washington Week aims to bring a new perspective to its discussions. The Atlantic is a renowned publication known for its thoughtful and in-depth reporting on politics, culture, and more. As an editorial partner, The Atlantic will contribute to the program’s content, helping to shape the discussions and provide unique insights on the current political landscape.
Washington Week has been a staple of television for over five decades, providing viewers with a platform to engage in meaningful conversations about politics and current events. With the addition of Jeffrey Goldberg and The Atlantic, the program is poised to continue its tradition of delivering thoughtful and incisive discussions. The show’s reputation for hosting the sharpest minds in news will only be further enhanced by this partnership. As viewers tune in on Friday evenings, they can expect to be informed and engaged by the civil and extended conversations that have become a hallmark of Washington Week.
