Leah Remini, the well-known actress, has filed a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, alleging that she is being stalked and harassed as part of a coordinated campaign to destroy her life because she left the religion. According to the lawsuit, Scientology is determined to silence her and others who are critical of the religion, leading to a systematic and coordinated campaign of harassment.
Leah Remini, who was a Scientologist for nearly 40 years before leaving, claims that Scientology has been attacking her with intentional malicious and fraudulent rumors via hundreds of social media accounts controlled by the church. These accounts exist solely to intimidate and spread misinformation. The alleged abuse she has faced is part of a broader policy and practice of intimidation within the Church of Scientology, which she says dates all the way back to founder L. Ron Hubbard.
In her lawsuit, Leah alleges that Scientology is stalking her and invading her privacy in an effort to tarnish her reputation and damage her Hollywood and business careers. She claims that Scientology has enlisted dozens of members to falsely accuse her of being abusive and racist in videotaped messages, which are then uploaded to web domains using her name. The church has also allegedly sent threatening letters to news outlets promoting her book and created websites to smear A&E after her documentary series on Scientology.
Leah first became aware that she was being followed by private investigators hired by Scientology in 2015 when she was promoting a memoir about the religion’s alleged abusive conduct. As a result, she hired private security to protect herself. The stalking and harassment have caused her to lose personal relationships, business deals, and other opportunities, resulting in enormous economic and psychological harm.
Leah Remini is seeking damages from the Church of Scientology for the harm she has suffered. She claims that the harassment has been ongoing since she renounced the religion and that the retaliation tactics are becoming more severe over time. Scientology’s alleged actions are not only intended to destroy her life but also to serve as a warning to others who might speak out against the church.
The Church of Scientology has not responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit.
