BMW is currently working on a mid-cycle update for its current-generation 4-Series range, and a prototype for the Gran Coupe hatchback has been spotted by car enthusiasts. The current 4-Series was introduced as a coupe for the 2021 model year, and the Gran Coupe body style was added for 2022. The updated range, including the Gran Coupe, is expected to be released as 2025 models next year.
The latest prototype was seen on the streets surrounding the famous Nürburgring track. From the spy shots, it’s evident that the facelifted 4-Series Gran Coupe will feature refreshed front and rear ends. The prototype’s camouflage gear hides many details, but we can expect to see changes in the interior design and possibly some new interior technology as well.
Although not completely visible, the spy shots reveal new designs for the head and taillights, as well as subtle tweaks to the intake design. However, one thing that remains unchanged is the controversial kidney grille that has divided opinions among BMW fans.
As for the interior, BMW test drivers made sure to keep the dashboard covered and out of view. However, it is expected that the separate screens of the instrument cluster and infotainment system will be merged into a single panel with the update. This is a feature already utilized by BMW in their electric i4 variant. Furthermore, the updated 4-Series Gran Coupe is likely to feature the latest version of the BMW iDrive infotainment system, which will be launched in November. This updated system will make it easier for users to access popular functions by arranging them on a single level.
Regarding powertrains, details are still unclear. The base grades of the 4-Series should continue to be powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine producing around 255 horsepower. More powerful M440i models are expected to retain the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering approximately 382 horsepower. The mild-hybrid system consists of an integrated starter motor and generator that recovers energy during braking. For the electric i4 variant, BMW is likely to continue offering single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive options, with power outputs of 281 and 469 horsepower, respectively.
It has already been confirmed by a BMW M executive that both the dual-clutch automatic and manual transmissions will be phased out in the BMW lineup, including M-specific models. The current 4-Series, including the M4, is only available with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and this will not change with the upcoming facelift.
Overall, the spy shots of the 2025 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe facelift indicate that BMW is focused on refreshing the design of the range and improving the interior technology. While specific details about powertrains and other features remain unknown, BMW fans can anticipate a more refined and advanced driving experience with the updated 4-Series Gran Coupe. The full details of the facelifted range are expected to be revealed next year when the 2025 models are introduced.
