XRHealth, the leading healthcare platform in spatial computing, has announced the results of a study showing that virtual reality (VR) therapy can significantly reduce stress and anxiety in patients. The study, published in Cell, found that using XRHealth’s VR technology for therapeutic intervention resulted in a 34% decrease in anxiety and a 32% reduction in stress. The therapy was particularly effective for female patients and those in the 18-24 age bracket, with a 73% decrease in stress reported.
Anxiety is a prevalent mental health condition in the United States, with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) affecting 6.8 million adults and 15 million adults diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder. Given the high number of diagnoses each year, it is crucial to have effective treatment options that can be performed from the comfort of home. XRHealth’s VR therapy offers an engaging and accessible solution for patients seeking mental health treatment.
The study involved 61 participants who received VR therapy solely in the metaverse. The group, ranging in age from approximately 15.7 to 45.7 years, consisted of 50% female, 19% male, and 31% identifying as other. The VR applications presented relaxing environments, encouraged breathing exercises, promoted physical fitness, and fostered mindfulness. The results demonstrated a 34% decrease in anxiety and a 32% reduction in stress after virtual reality therapy.
Further analysis of stress levels focused on 11 participants aged 18-34. Their stress levels were measured using heart rate monitoring and an online survey after experiencing augmented reality therapy in the form of a virtual island with a waterfall and campfire, with the option to listen to music. The study found that stress decreased in 73% of participants aged 18-24.
XRHealth’s approach to therapy is unique in that it combines advanced technology with the expertise of clinicians. Their spatial computing platform allows patients to interact with their clinicians in virtual rooms, providing therapeutic care from the comfort of their homes. The results of this study highlight the efficacy and convenience of virtual reality treatment, offering an alternative to traditional in-person therapy settings.
