Zachery Ty Bryan, the former child star known for his role in the sitcom “Home Improvement,” has been released from an Oregon jail after being booked on two felony charges. Bryan was arrested on July 28 by the Eugene Police Department and is facing fourth-degree assault, third-degree robbery, and misdemeanor harassment charges. He has retained criminal defense attorney John Kolego of Eugene law firm Kolego & Kraushaar, and his court date is set for September 5.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kolego confirmed that Bryan is now out of custody and emphasized the importance of presumption of innocence. Kolego urged people to withhold judgment until all the facts are known.
The incident leading to Bryan’s arrest involved a physical dispute between him and an adult female at a residence in Eugene. Police responded to the scene and Bryan was later brought into Lane County Jail on charges of assault in the fourth degree. The identity of the other party involved in the dispute has not been disclosed.
Bryan has been in a long-term relationship with Johnnie Faye Cartwright, with whom he shares three children, including a set of twins born in May. Following his arrest, Cartwright released a statement asking for privacy and stating her desire for the best outcome for the father of her children. She acknowledged the challenges of trauma and emphasized that the truth may not align with what has been portrayed.
This is not the first time Bryan and Cartwright have had a domestic dispute. In October 2020, Bryan pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, menacing and fourth-degree assault, following an altercation with Cartwright. He received probation, was required to attend a violence-intervention program, and had a no-contact order with Cartwright.
In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bryan discussed his previous legal issues and expressed frustration with how they were portrayed by the media. He described the situation as blown out of proportion and explained that the police often try to pressure individuals into pleading guilty.
Bryan’s legal troubles extend beyond domestic disputes. He has been arrested for DUI four times and has been involved in a breach of contract lawsuit related to a film investment. Bryan admitted to struggling with a drinking problem and a tumultuous personal life but expressed optimism about his journey to sobriety and finding happiness in the little moments of life.
While Bryan’s latest arrest adds to a series of legal troubles, it is important to remember the presumption of innocence until all the facts are presented in court. Individuals should reserve judgment until the case unfolds and the truth is revealed. Privacy and respect for the well-being of the children involved should also be prioritized in discussions surrounding this matter.
