Switzerland has chosen “Thunder,” directed by Carmen Jaquier, as its official entry for the Best International Feature category at the 2024 Oscars. This film, which marks Jaquier’s directorial debut, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and received critical acclaim throughout its festival run, including screenings at the San Sebastian, Busan, Zurich, and Locarno film festivals.
“Thunder” is set in a small Swiss village in 1900 and revolves around the story of 17-year-old Elisabeth, portrayed by French actress Lilith Grasmug. Elisabeth returns home from her convent after learning about her sister’s mysterious death. In reuniting with three childhood friends, she begins to navigate the complex interplay between her religious faith and her burgeoning sexuality.
Explaining their choice, the Swiss selection committee stated, “Set in an archaic mountain scenery, liberation and sisterhood are at the center of this timely feminist period film. Carmen Jaquier’s uniquely sensual first feature skillfully explores sexuality and faith and captivates with its nuanced mise-en-scène and evocative imagery.”
“Thunder” is produced by Joëlle Bertossa and Flavia Zanon of Geneva’s Close Up Films in association with RTS Radio Télévision Suisse. International sales for the film are being handled by WTFilms. Additionally, the film has been successfully released in Swiss cinemas through Sister Distribution and has already been sold to various territories, including Axia Films in Canada, La 25ème Heure for France/Benelux, and HBO for Eastern Europe. Domestic rights for the film are held by Dekanalog.
Lysa Le, representing Dekanalog, expressed excitement about bringing “Thunder” to North American audiences, describing it as a “sumptuous tale of turn-of-the-20th-century teenage faith and desire.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the shortlisted films for the 2024 Oscars on December 21. The final five nominees will then be revealed on January 23, 2024. The 95th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 10, 2024.
Switzerland’s decision to submit “Thunder” for consideration at the Oscars reflects the country’s commitment to showcasing diverse and thought-provoking cinema on an international platform. As the film explores themes of faith, desire, and sisterhood against the backdrop of a period drama, it sheds light on universal human experiences and offers audiences a unique perspective on Swiss culture and history.
The selection of “Thunder” also highlights the talent of Carmen Jaquier as a promising new director. Her ability to create a captivating narrative through meticulous attention to detail and striking visuals demonstrates her potential as a filmmaker to watch in the future.
By representing Switzerland at the Oscars, “Thunder” has the opportunity to further elevate the country’s reputation in the global film industry. The film’s international success and critical acclaim indicate its potential to resonate with audiences worldwide, making it a strong contender for the Best International Feature category.
As the journey to the 2024 Oscars progresses, “Thunder” will undoubtedly attract more attention and generate increased anticipation for its release in North America and other international markets. With its compelling story, strong performances, and beautiful cinematography, the film has the potential to make a lasting impact and leave a mark on the global film landscape.
