Lucid Motors, the luxury electric vehicle startup, has announced that its highly anticipated Gravity SUV will be revealed in November. The production of the SUV is scheduled to start in late 2024 at the same manufacturing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, where Lucid’s popular Air sedan is currently being built.
Following the November reveal, Lucid is expected to start accepting reservations for the Gravity SUV. The SUV has generated excitement since early 2020 when an early concept version was spotted on public roads during a photo shoot. Although the concept version was never officially revealed, Lucid provided teasers of the production version in 2022 and showcased a prototype earlier this year.
The Gravity SUV will be a mid-size offering with a seating capacity of up to seven passengers, split over three rows. Buyers will have the option to choose between a two-row configuration with five seats or a three-row configuration with six seats, featuring two individual reclining seats in the second row.
Similar to the Air sedan, the Gravity SUV will be based on Lucid’s LEAP platform (Lucid Electric Advanced Platform). The modular platform, known for its capabilities in the Air sedan, supports power outputs of over 1,200 horsepower and range estimates of more than 500 miles. While specific details regarding the Gravity’s performance have not been revealed, Lucid promises that it will offer more range than any other electric SUV currently available in the market.
The Gravity SUV will also boast a glass roof, providing a similar aesthetic as the Air sedan. Lucid has confirmed that the SUV will be equipped with a next-generation digital dashboard featuring the company’s latest user interface and advanced driver-assist technologies.
Although Lucid has garnered praise for its Air sedan, it has faced challenges in production and competition, primarily from Tesla. In its recent earnings announcement, Lucid disclosed that it only delivered 1,404 units in the previous quarter. However, the company expects its production numbers to reach over 10,000 units for the year 2023.
In an effort to boost sales, Lucid has implemented price reductions on most Air grades, including the base Air Pure with all-wheel drive, which now has a price tag of $82,400, down from its previous price of $87,400. This places the Air sedan at a lower price point than its rival, the Tesla Model S, which starts at $88,490 (excluding destination charges). Lucid plans to introduce an entry-level Air Pure with rear-wheel drive in mid-September, further lowering the price to below $80,000.
The introduction of the Gravity SUV aligns with Lucid’s goal of expanding its product lineup and appealing to a broader range of customers. With an emphasis on luxury, performance, and advanced technologies, Lucid aims to establish itself as a prominent player in the electric SUV market. The November reveal of the Gravity SUV will provide further details on its features, performance, and pricing, offering potential buyers the opportunity to reserve one of the most highly anticipated electric SUVs in the industry.
