At just 20 years old, Storm Reid has already achieved an impressive list of accomplishments in her acting career. From her breakout role in Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, to her recurring role on HBO’s Euphoria, and her headlining gig in the mystery thriller Missing, Reid has made a name for herself as a talented young actress. And now, she has been recognized for her stellar performance as Riley Abel in the popular video game adaptation, The Last of Us, earning her an Emmy nomination.
Balancing work and school as an undergraduate student at USC, Reid never expected to receive awards acclaim for her role in The Last of Us. “I knew that The Last of Us would be a very special show,” Reid tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I knew people would love it. But I didn’t necessarily think that I would get an Emmy nomination from it.”
When Reid arrived on set to film the seventh episode of The Last of Us, she immediately felt the collaborative energy among the cast and crew. “They worked hard together, and they wanted to make something really special,” she recalls. Although she didn’t have the opportunity to work directly with Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, Reid had the chance to spend some time with him and felt welcomed and appreciated by the entire cast and crew.
In her flashback episode of The Last of Us, Reid shares the screen with fellow Emmy nominee Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie. The show follows the relationship between Ellie and Joel as they navigate a post-apocalyptic America and search for a cure for the deadly infection. Reid’s character, Riley, runs away from military school to join the rebels known as the Fireflies, and she takes Ellie on a memorable adventure through an abandoned shopping mall before they part ways.
Amidst the excitement of her Emmy nomination, Reid has yet to reach out to her fellow castmates and nominees, but she has exchanged congratulatory messages with showrunner Craig Mazin. “I think we’re all just happy,” she says. “But I will be telling the rest of the cast and the crew congrats because they all deserve it.”
Reflecting on her portrayal of Riley, Reid mentions that the character came naturally to her. “I think she’s very nuanced and very complex, but also very simple,” she explains. “Just to be able to step into her shoes, experience her feelings, her coming-of-age in a post-apocalyptic world, it’s very tricky to figure out. But other than that, I think she was an amazing character to portray, and I’m so glad that I was able to get the opportunity to do so.”
As for her fellow nominees, Reid is particularly excited for Abbott Elementary, expressing her support and admiration for the show and its star, Quinta Brunson. She is also thrilled to be among such talented individuals being recognized for their work. “I hope everybody’s celebrating today,” she adds.
Due to the writers and actors strikes, the Emmy Awards, originally scheduled for September 18, have been postponed. The new date for the ceremony has not been announced at this time. This will be Reid’s first time attending the Emmys as both a nominee and an attendee. Despite being nervous, she plans to soak in the experience and take it moment by moment. She is excited to meet everyone and celebrate with them.
In the midst of the current state of affairs, Reid acknowledges the unprecedented times we are living in and hopes for a resolution soon. “We’re all living in scary times,” she reflects. “But I’m hopeful that we can all come to a resolution soon, so we can continue making beautiful work.”
Storm Reid’s journey in the entertainment industry has been remarkable so far, and her Emmy nomination for her role in The Last of Us is a testament to her talent and dedication. As she continues to pursue her acting career while balancing her studies, it is clear that Reid is a rising star to watch out for in the years to come.
