Netflix is entering the arena of spy thrillers with its latest film, “Heart of Stone.” Produced by Gal Gadot, who also stars in the film, and directed by Tom Harper, the movie aims to deliver an adrenaline-charged experience filled with action, suspense, and espionage. While it may not be the most original film on the streaming platform, it does the job and is likely to attract solid numbers. Additionally, Gadot’s chemistry with her co-star Jamie Dornan adds an extra layer of appeal to the film.
“Heart of Stone” centers around a powerful cyber tool called “The Heart,” which has the ability to hack into any network, manipulate technology, and bring down entire systems. Operated by a skilled techie named Jack of Hearts, the tool serves as the key asset for an underground peacekeeping organization called the Charter. Made up of highly trained former intel operatives, the Charter uses advanced technology to neutralize global threats, frustrated with their governments’ by-the-book methods.
Pushing the scenario further into a world of spy intrigue, the Charter is led by four figures known as the “Kings,” each representing a different playing card suit. Sophie Okonedo portrays Nomad, the tough-talking King of Hearts and the film’s central figure. The other three Kings, Clubs, Spades, and Diamonds, played by BD Wong, Mark Ivanir, and a surprise A-list cameo respectively, make strategic appearances throughout the film.
The film kicks off with a thrilling pre-title sequence involving an MI6 unit comprised of field agents Parker and Yang, transport and communications expert Bailey, and tech officer Rachel Stone, played by Gadot. Their mission is to take down Europe’s most-wanted arms dealer, Mulvaney, during a high-stakes elite gambling event at an Italian Alps casino. However, things don’t go as planned, and Rachel demonstrates unexpected skills that catch the audience off-guard.
Following the operation in Italy, the MI6 unit tracks down a mysterious woman named Keya, an Indian tech prodigy played by Alia Bhatt. The pursuit takes them to Lisbon, where a series of near-fatal encounters reveal that not everyone in the unit is who they seem to be. As the action unfolds, Rachel steps out from her undercover role and battles relentlessly to secure The Heart and protect it from falling into the wrong hands. Meanwhile, Keya’s personal agenda comes to light, and she begins to question the morality of her collaboration with a ruthless villain.
Director Tom Harper ensures that the film maintains a breakneck pace throughout, with intense fight and flight sequences. From luxury resorts and ski slopes to cable cars and old-town streets, the characters find themselves in one life-threatening situation after another. The action is complemented by a suspenseful score from Steven Price and spectacular stunt work and explosions.
While the script may not fully explore the motivations behind the main antagonist’s desire to control The Heart, the film compensates with its nonstop motion and globe-hopping adventure. From Italy to London, Portugal, the Senegalese desert, and Iceland, the characters traverse various locations, including a hydrogen-filled airship floating high in the African sky. Harper’s collaboration with cinematographer George Steel results in visually captivating scenes, despite a somewhat flat and grainy look on the big screen.
Gadot shines in her role as Rachel, showcasing her elegant athleticism while maintaining an air of vulnerability. Her bond with her MI6 comrades provides emotional depth to the film, and her eventual relationship with Keya adds an additional layer of sisterly connection. Notably, “Heart of Stone” is a female-driven action flick that does not require its protagonist to have a love interest—a refreshing departure from traditional spy films.
Dornan, known for his roles in dramas like “Belfast,” brings darker shades to his character, adding complexity to the story. Okonedo’s portrayal of Nomad exudes a no-nonsense authority, with notable performances from Bhatt, Schweighöfer, Ready, and Lusi supporting the main cast.
While “Heart of Stone” may not offer groundbreaking storytelling, it efficiently delivers an entertaining spy thriller experience. With its well-executed action sequences, strong chemistry between the leads, and a talented supporting cast, the film is likely to captivate Netflix audiences. Although it may not stand out among other spy thrillers, it succeeds in providing a thrilling ride for those who don’t take it too seriously.
