She was seen on the ground in Maui, specifically at the War Memorial Stadium evacuation center, where residents have been relocated due to the ongoing wildfire blazes. Since Tuesday, at least four major fires have caused over 50 fatalities and displaced countless residents, primarily in Lahaina, the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
While at the evacuation center, which is one of six open on the island, Winfrey, who has owned a residence on Maui for over a decade and possesses a private farm spanning more than 2,000 acres, according to Hawaii News Now, appeared visibly shaken. She expressed her emotions, stating, “It’s a little overwhelming, you know.” She further added, “But I’m really so pleased to have so many people, you know, supporting, and people are just bringing what they can and doing what they can.”
Winfrey actively participated in providing aid to the evacuees. She made multiple trips to the center and major stores to gather and distribute supplies. Understanding that donations of clothes may not always meet the immediate needs of the residents, she personally went to Walmart and Costco to buy items such as pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, and pillowcases.
This is not the first time Winfrey has demonstrated her support for the island of Maui during wildfire emergencies. In 2019, when fires spread across 10,000 acres of land and forced thousands of people to evacuate central Maui, Winfrey opened the private road to her ranch, offering assistance to island residents by allowing them to escape the blazes. Then-Hawaii Governor David Ige expressed his gratitude on social media, tweeting, “A big mahalo to @Oprah for giving @mauicounty access to your private road for use to assist in the #Mauifire.”
