The legendary music executive, who was highly regarded in the industry, died at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday. He quickly became a trailblazer in the world of music, managing numerous renowned singers and performers such as Sixto Rodriguez, Bill Withers, and the duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Avant’s influence extended beyond artist management as he founded two record labels, Venture Records in 1967 and Sussex Records in 1969. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in launching the first African-American-owned FM radio station.
Throughout his career, Avant made significant contributions to the industry. He brokered the sale of Stax Records, became the chairman of the board of Motown Records, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. These achievements solidified his status as a music industry icon.
Avant’s accomplishments were recognized and honored in various ways. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was presented with the Industry Icon Award at the Grammys in 2019. Tragically, Avant experienced the loss of his beloved wife, Jacqueline, in 2021. She was shot and killed during a burglary attempt at their Los Angeles home. The incident shocked and saddened many, and news of her passing was first reported by TMZ.
In his final years, Avant continued to be a prominent figure in the industry. In 2022, he was spotted leaving Craig’s in West Hollywood, where he was warmly greeted by fans while enjoying a night out with Ted Sarandos.
