The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles has announced their exciting lineup of programs and exhibitions for the fall season. One of the highlights is a new exhibition dedicated to the “trash filmmaker” John Waters. Additionally, the museum will be featuring the work of Agnès Varda, a prominent figure in the French New Wave movement, as well as showcasing newly scanned and restored Fleischer cartoon shorts.
The Academy Museum will also be celebrating its second birthday on Saturday, Sept. 30, by offering complimentary admission to all visitors.
According to Amy Homma, the chief audience officer of the Academy Museum, the fall programs are designed to tell immersive and dynamic stories of moviemaking that cater to visitors of all ages and abilities. She encourages visitors to experience the “John Waters: Pope of Trash” exhibition and then join the Drag Queen Story Hour, where they can witness kid-friendly live scene-readings from Waters’ films. In addition, visitors can explore the “Director’s Inspiration” gallery, which features personal artifacts from Agnès Varda, before heading to the theater to watch her work come to life on the big screen. The museum is also thrilled to continue its successful Weekend Shortcuts series, this time focusing on Fleischer cartoon shorts from almost a century ago, providing a free and family-friendly way to enjoy animated shorts.
The film screening series will begin on September 1 with “Yasujurō Ozu in Color: The Final Six Films,” a special screening of Ozu’s films shot in color. This will be followed by “Enter the VardaVerse: Afternoons in Paris” starting on September 3, “New Italian Cinema/Nuovo Cinema Italiano” on September 6, “John Waters: Pope of Trash” on September 17, and “Ennio Morricone: Essential Scores from a Movie Maestro” on October 6.
The highly anticipated John Waters exhibition will launch on September 17, with the filmmaker himself in attendance. The exhibition will kick off with a rare silent screening of his 1968 film “Eat Your Makeup,” accompanied by live commentary from Waters. This will be followed by a 35mm screening of his 1994 film “Serial Mom.” Fans will have the opportunity to meet Waters during a book signing and meet-and-greet session. Additionally, there will be a Drag Queen Story Hour featuring readings of iconic scenes from Waters’ films.
These programs and exhibitions aim to provide a diverse range of experiences for visitors to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Whether it’s exploring the world of “trash filmmaker” John Waters, diving into the work of Agnès Varda and Fleischer cartoon shorts, or enjoying screenings of classic films, there is something for everyone to enjoy. And with the complimentary admission on their second birthday, the museum hopes to attract a wide range of visitors to celebrate this special occasion.
