Kelsey Grammer is set to reprise his iconic role as Frasier Crane after 19 years in the revival of the hit sitcom Frasier. Paramount+ has released first-look images from the upcoming series, which is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, October 12.
The decision to premiere the revival during the traditional broadcast network fall-season rollout puts the streaming series right in the middle of the action. It also brings Frasier back to its original night when it was part of NBC’s Must-See TV lineup for several seasons. CBS will also air a broadcast sample of the show with two back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, October 17. Frasier originally premiered in 1993 and ran for 11 seasons.
The new series will follow Frasier Crane in the next chapter of his life as he returns to Boston with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge, and old dreams to finally fulfill.
However, some familiar faces will be missing from the revival. David Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier’s brother Niles, will not be returning. According to Kelsey Grammer, David wasn’t interested in repeating the performance of Niles. Pierce himself confirmed that nobody approached him about the revival, but he also stated that he wasn’t actively looking to reprise his role. Nonetheless, he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of appearing on the show in the future if the right opportunity arises. Jane Leeves, who portrayed Daphne, will also be absent from the revival. However, Bebe Neuwirth, who played Dr. Lilith Sternin, and Peri Gilpin, who portrayed Roz, will make guest star returns. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Frasier and Niles’ father, Martin, passed away in 2018.
Paramount+ has ordered a 10-episode season of the revival, which was filmed in front of a live studio audience at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. The new series will feature a talented ensemble cast, including Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy, Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan, Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department, Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve, and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.
The revival of Frasier is being developed by writers Chris Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Joe Cristalli (Life in Pieces), who also serve as executive producers alongside Kelsey Grammer, Tom Russo, and Jordan McMahon.
Frasier was the most Emmy-winning series of all time, with 37 wins, until HBO’s Game of Thrones surpassed it in 2016. It still holds the record for the most wins by a comedy series. Fans can catch up on the original series, as it is available to stream on Paramount+.
With the revival of Frasier, fans can look forward to seeing Kelsey Grammer take on his beloved role once again and witness Frasier Crane embark on new adventures in Boston. While there will be some notable absences, the talented cast and creative team behind the revival are sure to bring back the magic that made Frasier a beloved sitcom for over a decade.
