Paul Mescal, known for his role in the hit series Normal People, recently shared his nervousness about working with his Gladiator sequel co-star, Pedro Pascal. In a recent interview with Esquire, Mescal revealed that he actually saw Pascal at LAX airport before their involvement in the movie was announced but was too afraid to approach him. However, Pascal approached Mescal and their interaction left the rising star excited to hang out with his co-star.
Mescal takes on the lead role of adult Lucius in the Gladiator sequel. Lucius was portrayed as the young nephew of Commodus, the Roman Emperor played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original 2000 film. Interestingly, Mescal didn’t have to audition for the role but instead had a meeting with director Ridley Scott, during which they discussed the parameters of the story. Afterward, Mescal was given a script.
Unfortunately, production for the Gladiator sequel came to a halt due to ongoing dual strikes. However, Scott managed to complete about half of the filming before the pause.
When asked about the details of the Gladiator sequel, Mescal was cautious not to reveal anything he wasn’t supposed to. He admitted feeling stressed about discussing the film, as it is the biggest project he has worked on so far. However, he expressed excitement about the well-written script that pays homage to the original film while allowing him to comfortably make the role his own.
Despite his involvement in the Gladiator sequel, Mescal admitted that he hasn’t spoken to the original Gladiator star, Russell Crowe. He explained that he didn’t know what they would talk about, as the character he portrays is separate from Crowe’s character in the original film.
In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mescal expressed pride and nervousness about being a part of the Gladiator sequel. He acknowledged the intimidating feat of taking on such an iconic film but believed in his ability to deliver a compelling performance.
When discussing the potential body transformation required for his role as a gladiator, Mescal stated that he was not interested in the focus on physical appearance. While acknowledging the need for physical robustness for the character, he emphasized that the character’s fighting skills and beast-like qualities were more important. Mescal expressed his desire to portray a realistic character rather than the exaggerated physical appearances often seen in superhero and action films.
The Gladiator sequel also stars Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, and Joseph Quinn. As of now, the film is set to be released on November 24, 2024.
Overall, Paul Mescal’s involvement in the Gladiator sequel has brought both excitement and nerves. While he admits to feeling stressed about discussing the film, he is confident in his ability to make the role his own. With a talented cast and director like Ridley Scott, the Gladiator sequel is highly anticipated by fans and critics alike.
