iRobot is expanding its robot mop lineup by introducing two new combo models: the Roomba Combo j5 Plus and the Roomba Combo i5 Plus. Priced at $799 and $549 respectively, these combination cleaning bots offer simultaneous mopping and sweeping capabilities, along with a charging dock that automatically empties their dustbins. Compared to the company’s previous robot mop/vacuum, the Combo j7 Plus, which received mixed reviews, these new models provide improved functionality and affordability.
Unlike the Combo j7 Plus, which features a robotic arm that raises and lowers the mop to avoid carpets entirely, the new Combo j5 Plus and Combo i5 Plus do not have this arm. However, they offer a simple solution for mopping by allowing users to switch out the rear dustbin for a dustbin/water tank combination with a reusable mopping pad attached. This allows the robots to mop and sweep in one go. While competitors like Roborock offer oscillating action for mopping, iRobot claims that the downward pressure and movement of their robots is sufficient for effective scrubbing.
Both the Combo j5 Plus and Combo i5 Plus come with two bins: one for mopping and vacuuming, and another for just vacuuming. This modular design allows users to have more water capacity without the need for a pricey refilling dock. In testing, it was found that more water capacity resulted in better mopping performance. However, it’s worth noting that the new Roombas have smaller mopping reservoirs (210mL) and dustbins (360mL) compared to Roborock’s similar models, which have a water capacity of 300mL and bin capacity of 400mL.
One downside to the swappable module design is that users must remember to switch back to the vacuuming bin when cleaning carpeted rooms, as neither model is programmed to avoid carpets or rugs automatically. However, the smarter Combo j5 Plus allows users to set no-mopping zones in the app, giving them more control over cleaning preferences. On the other hand, the Combo i5 Plus lacks this feature, making it a better choice for rooms without rugs.
Both models come with an auto-empty charging dock called the Clean Base, which empties the vacuum’s dustbin. It’s important to note that the Clean Base only handles the vacuuming aspect and does not interact with the water system. That responsibility falls on the user.
The Combo j5 Plus belongs to iRobot’s high-end line, while the Combo i5 Plus falls under the midrange series. The Combo i5 Plus may potentially replace the current i3 Evo, which is considered the best budget vacuum. With the release of this model, significant price drops for the i3 Evo can be expected. Both models utilize iRobot’s operating system, providing features such as scheduling, shared maps, and room-specific cleaning capabilities. They both rely on iRobot’s vSLAM navigation (visual simultaneous localization and mapping) for maneuvering, but only the Combo j5 Plus has AI obstacle detection. This feature allows the robot to recognize household clutter and avoid getting derailed during cleaning tasks. The Combo j5 Plus also uses an onboard camera to identify objects like litter boxes, toilets, dishwashers, and more, enabling it to perform custom cleaning around those areas. Additionally, it features a dirt detect mode that provides a more thorough clean in dirty areas, a feature not available on the Combo i5 Plus.
While both models can create and store maps of a user’s home and clean specific rooms upon request, only the Combo j5 Plus allows for setting no-go and no-mop zones. The Combo i5 Plus will go anywhere it can reach unless virtual walls from iRobot are purchased separately.
The new Roomba combo models are compatible with popular voice assistants, including Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri, providing users with hands-free control options. Pre-orders for the models can be made on iRobot.com, with shipping slated for September. They will also be available at other retailers starting September 3rd. The Combo i5 Plus is currently available for purchase in Europe, while the Combo j5 Plus will be available in September.
