iRobot, the leading manufacturer of robotic vacuum cleaners, recently unveiled two new models that combine vacuuming and mopping capabilities. The Roomba Combo j5+ and Combo i5+ offer similar features to the higher-end Roomba j7+ at more affordable price points. However, there are a few tradeoffs to consider, such as the need to swap out the bins when switching between vacuuming and mopping.
One of the key differences between the two new models is their ability to identify “No Mop Zones.” The Roomba j5+, the higher-end model, can avoid rugs and carpeted rooms based on user preferences. It also boasts advanced obstacle avoidance technology, allowing it to steer clear of over 80 common floor hazards, including solid pet waste. Another notable feature exclusive to the j5+ is iRobot’s P.O.O.P. promise, which promises to replace the device if it fails to avoid pet messes.
The more affordable Roomba i5+ shares many similarities with its counterpart, with both models running iRobot OS and offering control through the iRobot Home app. They also come equipped with self-emptying dustbins and charging stations. When the appropriate bin is attached, the robots automatically switch between vacuuming and mopping. Both models have a 360ml dustbin and a 210ml mopping tank. Additionally, these machines are compatible with popular voice assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant, providing users with convenient control options. Although the i5+ lacks learning capabilities for specific carpeted or rugged areas, it allows users to label room names and program it to target specific areas.
The Roomba Combo j5+ and Combo i5+ are priced at $799 and $549, respectively, and are currently available for pre-order on iRobot’s website in North America. They will be available for retail purchase on September 3rd. European customers can already purchase the i5+, while the j5+ will be available in September. iRobot plans to expand its availability to other international markets throughout 2023 and early next year.
