BMW has unveiled its fifth-generation Mini Cooper, which marks the first electric vehicle (EV) in the Mini lineup to feature a unique design that sets it apart from its combustion-engine counterparts. The initial model in this new lineup is the Mini Cooper E, equipped with a powerful 135 kW/184 hp electric motor, producing 290 Nm of torque and accelerating from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 7.3 seconds. With an expanded driving range of 145 to 190 miles, this EV proves its capability on the road.
However, the Mini SE takes the distance to an even greater level, offering a range of 250 miles. This model also boasts higher performance, with a maximum torque of 330 Nm, a power output of 160 kW/218 hp, and an acceleration time from 0 to 62 miles per hour in an impressive 6.7 seconds. Notably, this electric vehicle’s batteries can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent within 30 minutes, providing a convenient and efficient charging solution for owners.
In terms of design, the latest generation Mini Cooper adopts a unique concept known as “Charismatic Simplicity,” emphasizing the modern and distinctive features of the vehicle. Oliver Heilmer, head of Mini Design, explains, “Inspired by our history, we have developed our own new design language, defining our DNA. The idea behind it is a design that gives each new MINI model a strong, individual character and is characterized by a clear, reduced design language intuitively focused on the essentials of the brand.”
The external design of the new Mini features larger wheels and flush door handles, contributing to its sleek and contemporary look. Notably, fender flares have also been removed, resulting in a clean and streamlined appearance. The interior design pays tribute to the original 1959 Mini, featuring a round instrument cluster placed prominently in the center, with toggle switches below it. The modern update includes a high-resolution 9.5-inch OLED display, introducing the Mini Operating System 9, which offers various functions ranging from media to apps. Moreover, this Mini also integrates the brand’s first “intelligent personal assistant,” represented by an animated Mini or Spike, the blue and white English Bulldog helper, making its debut in April. Spike can be seen on the round OLED display, functioning as a voice-activated assistant for navigation, entertainment, and more, accessible by pushing a button or simply saying, “Hey Mini.”
The fifth-generation Mini encompasses additional innovative features, including optional Parking Assistant Plus, equipped with 12 sensors and four cameras, as well as Green Mode, an efficient driving mode that can extend battery life. Additionally, BMW offers four distinct trim options for this new generation: Essential, Classic, Favored, and JCW, allowing customers to choose the Mini that best suits their preferences.
Simultaneously, BMW has also introduced the third-generation Mini Countryman, which represents the first time the crossover SUV will be available as an all-electric model. This new version of the Mini Countryman is slightly taller and longer than its predecessor, offering an impressive range of 287 miles for the Mini Countryman E, with a power output of 150 kW/204 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The Mini Countryman SE provides even more power, with a higher output of 230 kW/313 hp and 494 Nm of torque, although slightly reducing the range to 269 miles.
Among the enhancements in the Mini Countryman are a revamped toggle bar featuring five switches, improved aerodynamics, and wider wheel arches, contributing to its sporty and dynamic appearance. The decision to introduce an all-electric version of the Mini Countryman aligns with BMW’s broader goal of transitioning the entire Mini lineup to be fully electric by 2030, a major step toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.
Overall, with the launch of its fifth-generation Mini Cooper and the third-generation Mini Countryman, BMW is reinforcing its commitment to electric mobility and the future of sustainable transportation. These new models offer impressive performance, extended driving ranges, and innovative features that cater to the needs and preferences of electric vehicle enthusiasts. With the continued growth of the EV market and the increased focus on reducing carbon emissions, BMW’s efforts to electrify its Mini lineup are a significant contribution to the ongoing global shift towards cleaner and greener transportation.
