SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (SCDAO) – In a disturbing case, Joseph T. Johnson, a 33-year-old resident of Wyandanch, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison followed by 20 years of post-release supervision for raping a woman inside her home in September 2020. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney made the announcement and expressed his hopes that this sentence would provide the victim with a sense of safety knowing that the defendant would be incarcerated and unable to harm her or anyone else in the future.
The defendant’s actions were characterized by violence and a complete disregard for the victim’s personal security. After breaking into the victim’s residence in Wyandanch on September 19, 2020, Johnson proceeded to rape her. However, the victim, displaying admirable bravery and quick-thinking, installed several surveillance cameras in and around her home after the assault. This move would prove critical in capturing Johnson when he returned to the crime scene.
Two days later, on September 21, 2020, the victim received an alert indicating that her newly installed surveillance cameras had been turned off. Upon further investigation, she discovered that the cameras had been damaged and wires had been cut. Fortunately, the video footage captured before the cameras were tampered with showed Johnson, wearing white face paint, inside the victim’s residence. Subsequently, the Suffolk County Police Department apprehended Johnson, and an investigation proved his guilt through DNA testing.
On July 28, 2023, Johnson pleaded guilty to Rape in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony, before County Court Judge Karen M. Wilutis. Finally, on September 25, 2023, Judge Wilutis sentenced Johnson to 18 years in prison, with an additional 20 years of post-release supervision. In addition, Johnson will be required to register as a sex offender. During the legal proceedings, Johnson was represented by Ian Fitzgerald, Esq.
