Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer, announced on Tuesday that the Polestar 3 is currently in its final stage of testing. To ensure the vehicle’s performance in extreme conditions, testing is being conducted in the scorching temperatures of the United Arab Emirates, where temperatures have soared as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius).
The Polestar 3, which made its debut last fall, was originally scheduled to begin deliveries this year. However, the vehicle faced software issues that resulted in production delays. As a result, Polestar had to push back the start of production to the first half of 2024. The related Volvo EX90 also encountered similar software problems, leading Volvo to also postpone its production until the first half of 2024.
The starting price for the Polestar 3 has been confirmed at $85,300, including a $1,400 destination charge. Although the electric mid-size SUVs are already on display at Polestar stores, test drives will only be possible in 2024.
Production for the North American market will take place at Volvo’s plant in Charleston, South Carolina. This facility currently builds the Volvo S60, and it will also handle the production of the Polestar 3. For the Chinese market, production will be handled in China.
The Polestar 3 is built on Volvo’s new SPA2 platform, specifically developed for electric vehicles while also capable of supporting hybrid powertrains. It will be available at launch with a dual-motor powertrain, delivering 489 horsepower as standard and 517 horsepower with an available Performance Pack. The acceleration from 0 to 60 mph will be achieved in 4.9 seconds as standard, or 4.6 seconds with the Performance Pack. Both versions will have a top speed of 130 mph.
Equipped with a 111-kWh battery, the Polestar 3 is estimated to have a range of 300 miles, according to Polestar’s estimates based on EPA ratings.
In addition to the Polestar 3, the company has plans to launch other models in the coming years. Next year, Polestar will introduce the Polestar 4, a compact crossover. Following that, a Polestar 5 sedan is due for release in 2023, and a Polestar 6 roadster will hit the market in 2026. Lastly, the company has a mysterious model in the works, known as the Polestar 7, expected to arrive around 2027.
Polestar’s expansion into the electric vehicle market showcases its commitment to sustainable mobility. With a range of models spanning various segments, Polestar aims to cater to different customer preferences and needs while prioritizing innovative electric technology.
The Polestar 3, with its cutting-edge features, high performance, and impressive range, is set to make a significant impact in the growing electric vehicle market. With its successful testing underway, Polestar enthusiasts can look forward to a groundbreaking SUV that combines luxury, sustainability, and dynamic driving experiences.
