Porsche introduced its latest track car, the 911 GT3 R Rennsport, at the Rennsport Reunion held at Laguna Seca. This limited edition vehicle is based on Porsche’s 911 GT3 R race car and only 77 units will be produced, each with a price tag of $1,046,000. Without any racing regulations to meet, the 911 GT3 R Rennsport is one of the most capable track-focused 911s ever built. In 2018, Porsche unveiled a similar creation, the modern 935, at the previous Rennsport Reunion.
The design team, led by Grant Larson and Thorsten Klein, who are in charge of low-volume car projects at Porsche, made several modifications to the 911 GT3 R to create the Rennsport version. They increased the width of the car and visually stretched its length, with only the hood and roof remaining unchanged from the GT3 R.
Some notable design features of the Rennsport include new front intakes, a camera system replacing traditional side mirrors, and a rear wing inspired by the iconic 935/77 race car fielded by Brumos Racing. The car is also equipped with bespoke 18-inch center-lock wheels from BBS, wrapped in Michelin tires with a special compound for improved warm-up and drivability. The wheels house powerful AP aluminum monobloc racing brakes with titanium-backed pads, saving approximately 2.2 pounds of unsprung mass.
Powering the 911 GT3 R Rennsport is a 4.2-liter flat-6 engine, similar to the one in the GT3 R. However, without any restrictions, the engineers were able to boost the power output to a peak of 611 hp, compared to the GT3 R’s maximum of 557 hp. The engine revs up to 9,400 rpm and features specially designed pistons and camshafts.
The car’s exhaust system plays a significant role in its sound, with Porsche stating that it is reminiscent of the former 911 RSR race cars. However, the sound can vary depending on the exhaust system equipped. There are three options, two of which feature catalytic converters and mufflers to reduce noise for circuits with noise restrictions.
The chassis of the Rennsport is largely the same as the GT3 R, featuring five-way adjustable dampers from KW. Shims can be used to make fine adjustments to the suspension without the need for extensive measurements. Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential transmission with revised gearing, including a sixth gear that enables a higher top speed compared to the GT3 R.
Inside the cabin, the Rennsport boasts unique features such as screens displaying information from the side cameras, special graphics on the central display, and a limited-edition number on the instrument panel. Porsche has also included an ambient lighting package that complements the color-adjustable main headlights.
Buyers will have a choice of seven standard colors for the exterior, along with three special designs inspired by racing liveries. One of these designs is called Flacht Design, featuring a red and white color scheme inspired by Porsche Motorsport’s traditional colors. The name Flacht refers to the Flacht area of Weissach, where Porsche’s motorsport department is located.
Overall, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport is a highly exclusive and track-focused version of the GT3 R. With its enhanced performance, unique design elements, and limited production run, it showcases Porsche’s commitment to delivering exceptional driving experiences for enthusiasts.
