Nissan has unveiled its latest electric vehicle concept, the Hyper Adventure, as part of its lineup of four EV concepts set to be showcased at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show. The Hyper Adventure is a rugged SUV designed specifically for outdoor enthusiasts, following the Hyper Urban crossover concept that caters to urban lifestyles.
In terms of design, the Hyper Adventure features a boxier shape compared to the Hyper Urban, which had a more coupe-like profile. Despite its boxy design, Nissan has ensured that the Hyper Adventure maintains aerodynamic efficiency, which is crucial for maximizing the range of an electric vehicle. The concept incorporates channels to help direct the flow of air and has smoothed out any normal gaps or protruding features typically found on cars, including the seamless intersection of the side windows and the roof.
The cabin of the Hyper Adventure provides access through conventional doors for front-seat passengers, while rear-seat passengers can enter through gullwing doors. Taking a unique approach, Nissan has extended the information display for the driver beyond the dashboard and onto the bottom of the windshield, a feature that BMW also plans to introduce in its next-generation EVs. At the rear, the bench seat has been designed to flip backward, providing outdoor seating when the vehicle is parked.
Although Nissan has not revealed specific details about the platform or powertrain of the Hyper Adventure, it has confirmed the presence of an all-wheel-drive system with Nissan’s e-4ORCE torque vectoring system. Additionally, the concept boasts bidirectional charging capabilities and a large-capacity battery, allowing it to power a campsite or charge electric recreational equipment such as dirt bikes or jet skis. The bidirectional charging functionality also allows the vehicle to act as an energy storage unit for a home, helping to charge it during off-peak hours when electricity rates are low or utilizing solar power. The stored energy can then be discharged during peak hours when electricity rates are higher.
The Hyper Adventure, along with the rest of the Hyper family of concepts, serves as a preview of the designs and technologies that will be featured in Nissan’s upcoming production EVs. With a limited EV lineup at present, Nissan plans to expand its offerings to include 19 electric vehicles by 2030, spread across the Nissan and Infiniti brands. Although specific details about the future EV lineup have not been disclosed, it is expected that a range of crossovers, sedans, and possibly even a pickup truck for the U.S. market could be part of Nissan’s electrification strategy.
The 2023 Tokyo Auto Show will provide a platform for Nissan to showcase its ambitious plans for the electric vehicle market. With the reveal of the Hyper Adventure concept, Nissan aims to demonstrate its commitment to designing and producing EVs that cater to various lifestyles, including both urban and outdoor environments. By incorporating innovative design features, advanced powertrain technologies, and bidirectional charging capabilities, Nissan is positioning itself as a prominent player in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle industry. As the automotive market continues to shift toward sustainable mobility solutions, Nissan’s efforts toward electrification are expected to play a key role in shaping the future of transportation.
