Kia, a popular automotive brand, has ambitious plans to introduce 14 electric vehicles (EVs) to its lineup by 2027. The company recently previewed three of these electric vehicles at its first-ever Kia EV Day event held in Seoul, South Korea.
The preview showcased a production model known as the EV5, as well as conceptual designs for the EV3 and EV4. These new models are set to join the existing lineup of electric vehicles, including the EV6 compact crossover and EV9 mid-size SUV. However, it should be noted that there is no official confirmation yet regarding the availability of these three models in the United States.
While Kia mentioned that the EV5 is being considered for the North American market, it will not be manufactured in that region. Production of the EV5 will take place in Kia’s plants located in South Korea and China. Sales of the EV5 are expected to begin in China later this year.
The EV5 was previously teased by Kia and is described as a compact crossover. It made its first appearance at the 2023 Chengdu auto show in August. The EV5 measures approximately 182 inches in length, making it slightly smaller than the EV6. Its exterior design closely resembles Kia’s EV5 concept revealed in March, giving it a miniaturized version of the EV9’s appearance.
The interior of the EV5 is also aligned with the concept, featuring a minimalist dashboard design. The dashboard incorporates a single panel that combines a pair of 12.3-inch screens for the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system. Additionally, a separate 5.0-inch screen supports a three-zone climate control system. Kia offers optional features such as a head-up display and ambient lighting package.
Similar to the EV6 and EV9, the EV5 is based on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) developed by Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis. Depending on the market, customers will have the option to choose from 58 kWh, 64 kWh, and 88 kWh battery capacities. The EV5 also offers both single-motor and dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain options, with the most powerful variant delivering 308 horsepower.
The EV5 comes equipped with advanced features that enhance the driving experience. These include one-pedal driving, bidirectional charging capabilities, and various electronic driver-assist systems. Some of the driver-assist features available either as standard or optional include remote automatic parking, an exit warning system, and an automated highway driving system that helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane, facilitates lane changes, and acts as adaptive cruise control.
Kia aims to make the EV5 accessible to a wide range of customers by targeting a starting price below $50,000 if it becomes available in the U.S. market. In addition, Kia may introduce a different electric crossover, potentially named the EV7, that will be produced in North America to take advantage of EV tax credits.
Kia’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup demonstrates the company’s dedication to providing sustainable and environmentally-friendly mobility options. With its range of electric vehicles, Kia aims to cater to the growing demand for EVs and offer consumers innovative and affordable choices for cleaner transportation.
In conclusion, Kia’s Kia EV Day provided a glimpse into the future of the brand with the introduction of the EV5 production model and the EV3 and EV4 concepts. These additions to the Kia electric vehicle lineup, along with the existing EV6 and EV9 models, showcase Kia’s commitment to electrification. As Kia continues to prioritize sustainability, it aims to bring a wide range of electric vehicles to consumers worldwide, offering advanced technology, stylish design, and an environmentally-friendly driving experience.
