The Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection is the latest limited-edition Rolls Royce car that takes inspiration from solar eclipses. Coming at a fitting time, it was unveiled just before the annular solar eclipse visible in parts of the Western Hemisphere on October 14th.
Based on the Ghost Black Badge, which is the dark-themed version of Rolls-Royce’s smaller sedan, the Ékleipsis Private Collection adds a touch of Lyrical Copper paint. This unique paint color is designed to mimic the effect of a solar eclipse, where the moon passes in front of the sun, temporarily obscuring it. The paint is made with copper pigment, which produces an iridescent finish when subjected to direct light. Additionally, the car features Mandarin (orange) accents on the grille inserts, brake calipers, and a side pinstripe.
Inside the Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection, you’ll find a one-of-a-kind version of Rolls-Royce’s Starlight Headliner. This system uses integrated lighting elements to create an image of the night sky on the car’s headliner. In this particular edition, the system replicates a solar eclipse. When the rear doors are closed and the engine is started, the lighting elements darken, and then form a circle of 940 individual lights, representing the outline of the sun behind the moon. Behind this circle, there are an additional 192 “stars” to complete the eclipse effect. The animation of this sequence lasts for exactly seven minutes and 31 seconds, which is the longest possible duration of a solar eclipse. After the sequence, the headliner displays a full night sky.
The attention to detail extends to the dashboard fascia, which features 1,846 laser-etched “stars” depicting the timeline of a solar eclipse. It takes 100 hours to complete this design, with a single designer carefully placing each star in its rightful spot. And, for the first time ever, a half-carat diamond has been integrated into the dashboard clock. To ensure it stays in place, the clock assembly was tested in extreme temperature conditions ranging from -22 degrees Fahrenheit to 194 degrees Fahrenheit.
Reflecting the effect of a 360-degree sunset created by a solar eclipse, the two-tone perforated leather upholstery in the Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection reveals orange spots beneath the black leather seats through over 20,000 individual perforations. Even the hidden umbrellas in the car’s doors have orange piping to match the theme.
Under the hood, the Black Badge models share the same twin-turbocharged 6.8-liter V-12 engine as the standard Ghost. However, in the Black Badge edition, the engine produces 592 horsepower, compared to 563 horsepower in the standard model. Power is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Rolls-Royce claims that the Black Badge models are capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.
All the available Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection cars have already been spoken for. However, it is only a matter of time before Rolls-Royce introduces another limited-edition collection, given their history of creating exclusive and distinctive vehicles.
