Toyota is set to launch an electric pickup truck in the near future, and at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show, the automaker will give a glimpse of its potential design with the EPU concept. The EPU is a mid-size electric truck with a total length of 199.6 inches and a wheelbase of 131.9 inches, making it smaller than the redesigned 2024 Tacoma, which measures 212.3 inches in length and has a wheelbase of 140.6 inches.
While there are no dimensions provided for the bed, the EPU concept features a folding tailgate design that allows for extra inches to be added to the bed length when needed. This makes it convenient for carrying larger objects such as dirt bikes or small quads.
One notable feature of the concept is its car-like unibody design, which is common among compact trucks. This sets it apart from larger trucks like the Tacoma, which typically have a body-on-frame design. The interior of the EPU concept draws inspiration from Toyota’s bZ line of electric vehicles, featuring a sleek and modern cabin. It even includes a yoke-style steering wheel, which Toyota and Lexus are gradually introducing in select markets. These steering wheels are designed to work with drive-by-wire systems and enable one-handed lock-to-lock maneuvers.
In addition to the EPU concept, Toyota will also present a more advanced version of the yoke-style steering wheel at the Tokyo Auto Show, known as the Neo Steer. This concept integrates small flap paddles on the wheel, similar to motorcycle controls, and is designed to enable individuals with lower limb disabilities to drive.
